Bandits have kidnapped 24 people, including pregnant women, from a rice farm in Palaita community, Erena Ward, Shiroro LGA of Niger State.

The attackers struck while residents were harvesting crops and escaped before security forces could respond, despite the area being close to a military base.

Earlier, another group of armed men attacked the Kakuru community in the same ward, assaulting a blind man and cutting off his right hand after taking a mobile phone from him.

He told them the phone belonged to a neighbour, but the attackers still amputated his hand. He is receiving first aid in Kuduru community.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) says the Federal Government has quietly abandoned the Safe Schools Initiative, a programme created to protect students and teachers from attacks.

Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s spokesperson, spoke after a closed-door meeting of ADC leaders in Abuja, chaired by national chairman David Mark.

Former Kaduna governor Nasir el-Rufai was also in attendance.

Abdullahi said many states are shutting schools and sending pupils home instead of fixing security lapses. arguing that closing schools empowers violent groups and worsens fear, insisting the government should strengthen security rather than retreat.

He criticised the neglect of the Safe Schools Initiative and Safe Schools Programme, saying they once showed a commitment to protect children but have now been abandoned.

The ADC called on the Federal Government to deploy the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to all unity schools and take urgent, transparent steps to secure and reopen affected institutions.

Abdullahi urged authorities to ensure children return to school safely and resist the spread of insecurity. He also congratulated families whose abducted relatives were recently released.

The Federal Government recently ordered the closure of dozens of unity colleges over rising security threats.

Presidential Aide Speaks on Why Security Agencies Can’t Bomb Bandit Enclaves https://afinjufm.com/presidential-aide-speaks-on-why-security-agencies-cant-bomb-bandit-enclaves/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=presidential-aide-speaks-on-why-security-agencies-cant-bomb-bandit-enclaves https://afinjufm.com/presidential-aide-speaks-on-why-security-agencies-cant-bomb-bandit-enclaves/#respond Tue, 25 Nov 2025 10:14:14 +0000 https://afinjufm.com/?p=16529 The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has said that security agencies are aware of the identities and locations of the bandit groups responsible for recent mass abductions.

Onanuga stated this while in an interview with journalists, saying that the operation of security operatives are often restricted by the risk of collateral damage to civilians held in captivity by bandits.

“Our people are living around where they operate. So you can’t just go there. They need to be very careful that in the course of chasing these bandits, they don’t go and bomb innocent Nigerians,” he said.

The presidential aide recalled a past incident in Borno State where the military mistakenly struck civilians.

“Some years ago in Borno State, when the military thought they had the right satellite connection, they bombed the wrong people. They must avoid that kind of mistake,” he said.

He added that uncertainty persists about the exact number of abducted students because neither the school nor the Niger State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria has provided complete records.

“As of now, the authorities are in the dark as to how many people are really missing. You said students are missing, let us have their names. Let us know what we are looking for,” he said.

Onanuga also claimed that the school principal had “disappeared”, complicating the verification process.

He further explained the reason security forces do not immediately storm bandit camps after abductions.

“What sometimes restrains them from going after them is the risk of collateral damage. They go about abducting our people and use them as a shield so that they will not be attacked,” he said.

Onanuga added that the bandits understand the consequences of defying government pressure.

Oyinlola made this known while addressing journalists in Osogbo, Osun State.

Commenting on insecurity, the PDP chieftain identified unemployment, weak governance, poor education, and a failing security architecture as major drivers of banditry, kidnapping, and insurgency, noting that conflicts in the country stem from poor communication and unresolved issues.

He called for stronger community vigilance, recalling a time when local leaders monitored strangers and maintained order before insecurity worsened.

Speaking on the series of defections from the PDP to the APC, Oyinlola said many of the politicians crossing over were driven by personal interests and fear of investigations by anti-graft agencies.

Despite this, he expressed strong confidence that the PDP remains solid on the ground and can still reclaim victory in the 2026 governorship election in Osun State, as well as make a strong showing in the 2027 general elections.

At least 145 people have been kidnapped in Kebbi, Niger, and Zamfara states in the past four days.

In the run-up to the 2023 general elections, abductions were rampant.

According to reports, between January and March 2023 alone, 792 people were abducted across Nigeria.

Many of these incidents were tied to banditry and criminal gangs, especially in the north.

However, as the political parties are warming up for the 2027 elections, there appears to be a resurgence of the situation.

In a recent kidnapping, armed men stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, abducting 25 female students and killing a staff member.

A school guard was also injured during the attack, which occurred early in the morning.

The Nigeria Police Force, in a statement shared via its WhatsApp channel, confirmed the incident, noting that police tactical units deployed within the school engaged the attackers but the gunmen escaped with the abducted students.

The police said additional tactical teams, in collaboration with the military and vigilantes, have been deployed to comb suspected bandit routes and nearby forests in a bid to rescue the victims and arrest the perpetrators.
