Ewhrudjakpo alleged, among others, that members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly were being pressured to impeach him for failing to resign, like the governor, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on whose platform they had been appointed.

In the suit filed on his behalf at the Federal High Court, Abuja, by his lawyer, Reuben Egwuaba, it was alleged that members of the House of Assembly were currently plotting to impeach Ewhrudjakpo.

It was also alleged that some local government chairmen, including that of Sagbama Local Government Area, Alice Tange, are also being threatened with sack for allegedly failing to leave the PDP along with the governor.

After listening to his counsel who moved an ex-parte motion, Justice Emeka Nwite ordered the defendants to appear before the court to show cause why the interim reliefs being sought against them by the plaintiff should not be granted.

In a three-count charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/374/2025 and filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, Sowore is accused of publishing false information about the Nigeria Police Force on his media platform and of forging a police wireless signal.

The charges read in part:

“That you, Omoyele Sowore and Sahara Reporters, on or about the 30th day of July 2025, conspired to commit a felony to wit: forgery, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 1(2)(C) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act, Cap M17, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria.”

“That you, Omoyele Sowore and Sahara Reporters, on or about the 30th day of July 2025, forged a police wireless message purportedly signed by the Principal Staff Officer to the Inspector General of Police, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 1(2)(C) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act.”

“That you, Omoyele Sowore, on or about the 31st day of July 2025, intentionally posted a fake police signal and other inciting materials on your Facebook page with the intention to incite members of the Nigeria Police Force and the general public to mutiny against the Federal Government, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 114 of the Penal Code Law.”

Sowore was scheduled for arraignment on Wednesday. However, the proceedings were delayed due to the prosecution’s inability to serve court documents, listed as the second defendant in the case.

Justice Emeka Nwite granted the request and adjourned the matter to September 15, 2025, for arraignment of the defendants.

Hold IGP accountable for any ugly eventualities – Osun PDP cries out https://afinjufm.com/hold-igp-accountable-for-any-ugly-eventualities-osun-pdp-cries-out/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=hold-igp-accountable-for-any-ugly-eventualities-osun-pdp-cries-out https://afinjufm.com/hold-igp-accountable-for-any-ugly-eventualities-osun-pdp-cries-out/#respond Wed, 19 Feb 2025 15:23:47 +0000 https://afinjufm.com/?p=8923 The ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Osun State, has noted that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has connived with the opposition, All Progressives Congress, APC, to destabilize the state through orchestrated violence and unrest.

The post Hold IGP accountable for any ugly eventualities – Osun PDP cries out appeared first on Afinju FM.

The party made this known in a statement from its Chairman, Sunday Bisi who maintained that Egbetokun deliberately deployed Special forces to escort miscreants into the local government councils in the State.

“Mr Egbetokun’s deliberate deployment of Special Forces under him to escort some miscreants into the local government councils in the state was nothing but a blatant coup and obviously, one out of the many mapped-out plans to assassinate the Governor of our dear State, Senator Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke, whose instruction to restore peace and order as the Chief Security Officer of Osun State, was flagrantly violated by Mr Egbetokun,” the statement reads.

The party also asserted that the move is one of the plans to assassinate the incumbent Governor, Ademola Adeleke who has called for peace and order as the number one citizen of the State.

Speaking on behalf of the party, Bisi emphasized that the IGP has not only betrayed the Governor who had called for peace but also set dangerous routes for troublemakers to carry out deadly acts, saying the state has lost not less than 10 lives since the beginning of the week.

” The motive of security reinforcement if required and as discussed with Egbetokun by His Excellency, the Governor, has not only been betrayed by Mr Egbetokun, but has also set dangerous routes for trouble makers to carry out their dastardly acts even when the state has just lost almost 10 of our sons and daughters to violent confrontations in less than 48hours ago,” he said.

He however commended the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission, OSSIEC, for towing the path of law in the preparation for the upcoming local government election in the State, stressing that the February 22, 2025, election will have to be held without fail.

According to a statement by the force spokesman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, some of the arms were carted away by hoodlums during civil unrest.

Adejobi said the Force had to clarify that the report appears to stem from an assessment of the report by the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation, AuGF, dating back to 2019, likely reflecting records compiled before the current Inspector-General of Police’s tenure.

He stated that it is important to acknowledge the challenges faced by the police during periods of civil unrest, during which several Police Officers were killed and their arms carted away, and some attacks and looting of police facilities and armories, resulting in the loss of arms.

Adejobi further said that every effort has been made to account for the arms taken, while many have been recovered back to the arms holding of the force at the moment.

He also noted that when auditors conduct visits to their armories, they may not find all arms present at the time due to the issuance of weapons to personnel for operational purposes, many spanning months depending on the nature of such operations, which consequently may lead to misconceptions regarding the accuracy of audit reports.

The PSC’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, in a statement noted that the commission reviewed its earlier stance from the 24th plenary meeting in September 2017, which allowed force entrants to use their date of enlistment instead of their initial appointment date.

The directive follows controversy over the tenure of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun after he clocked 60 years.

The Police and the Attorney General of the Federation have said his continued stay in office is lawful.

However, Ani said the PSC has now reversed this decision, citing its inconsistency with Public Service Rule No. 020908, i & ii, which mandates retirement upon reaching 35 years in service or 60-Years.

Ani said the Police Service Commission rose from its first extraordinary meeting with the approval for the immediate retirement of senior police officers who have spent more than 35 years in service and those above 60 years of age.

The Commission Chairman, DHashimu Argungu, retd, presided over the extraordinary meeting and had the retired Justice of the Supreme Court and Hon Commissioner representing the Judiciary, Justice Adamu Galumje; DIG Taiwo Lakanu rtd, FDC, Honourable Commissioner representing the Police; and Onyemuchi Nnamani, Secretary to the Commission in attendance.

Ani added that the directive has been formally communicated to the Inspector General of Police for immediate implementation.

Court adjourns Speed Darlington’s suit against IGP https://afinjufm.com/court-adjourns-speed-darlingtons-suit-against-igp/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=court-adjourns-speed-darlingtons-suit-against-igp https://afinjufm.com/court-adjourns-speed-darlingtons-suit-against-igp/#respond Mon, 27 Jan 2025 16:51:44 +0000 https://afinjufm.com/?p=8406 A Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned the N300 million fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by the singer, Darlington Achakpo, popularly known as Speed Darlington, against the police, until March 19 for the adoption of processes.

The post Court adjourns Speed Darlington’s suit against IGP appeared first on Afinju FM.

]]>
Justice Musa Liman fixed the date after counsel for the Inspector-General of Police, CSP Audu Garba, informed the court that the police had just filed a further counter affidavit in response to the singer’s further affidavit served on them in the last adjourned date.

Rosemary Hamza, who appeared for Speed Darlington, said she was yet to be served to know how to respond appropriately.

The artiste, who urged the court to declare that his arrest and detention violated his fundamental rights as guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution, sought four orders.

In the suit filed by Deji Adeyanju, he sought an order directing the I-G to immediately and unconditionally release him from the detention facility where he is being kept.

Alternatively, he sought an order mandating and compelling the I-G to produce him before the court to enable the court to inquire into the circumstances constituting grounds of his arrest and detention and where it deems fit, admit him to bail.

He also sought an order directing the respondent to pay the applicant the sum of N300,000,000.00 only as general, exemplary and aggravated damages for their unlawful and continued detention since 2024 till date.

In the affidavit deposed by Esther Eyisi, a secretary in the law firm, she alleged that Speed Darlington was first arrested on October 4, 2024, for allegedly defaming Burna Boy, a popular musician.

She said he was illegally detained for five days and subjected to severe torture and maltreatment without being formally charged to a court of competent jurisdiction.

Eyisi averred that the artiste was eventually granted bail by the police after spending five days under inhumane conditions.

According to her, the applicant was arrested and detained by officers of the respondent because he allegedly jumped administrative bail on November 27, 2024.

This, she said, was in spite of notification from her client about his medical emergency and his inability to report on the scheduled date and obtaining the permission of the officers of the respondent to travel to Owerri, Imo for a performance.

She said the continuous detention of Speed Darlington without arraignment contravened his constitutional rights, describing him as the breadwinner in his family.

But in the police counter affidavit deposed to by SP David Atama, he averred that on September 24, 2024, his office received a petition from the nominal complainant, Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, through his counsel G.C. Ijioma of Rockfold Chambers.

Atama said Burna Boy alleged threat to his life, and intimidation, among his followers, which is contrary to Section 24 of the Cybercrime Prohibition, Prevention Act, 2015, as amended.

The officer alleged that in the course of the investigation, Speed Darlington was invited and he came and volunteered a written statement and admitted the commission of the offence.

But in the further affidavit, Speed Darlington said he had never admitted to committing any offence.

The singer said the allegations in the counter affidavit were false and misleading as Burna Boy himself had confirmed the allegation which is now the subject of a brute joke that several personalities have been making publicly in respect of the said Burna Boy.

He said he had never jumped bail, contrary to the submission of the police.

Meanwhile, Speed Darlington on Jan. 15, admitted to a N20 million bail with one surety by Justice Ekerete Akpan of a sister court in Abuja.

Justice Akpan gave the order in a ruling on the singer’s bail application moved by his lawyer, Marshall Abubakar after he pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge bordering on alleged cybercrime.

The court subsequently fixed March 19 for parties to adopt their processes.
