Those sworn in are Omosede Igbinedion (Ovia South/Ovia West/Ovia North-East Federal Constituency, Edo State), Joseph Bagudu (Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency, Kaduna State) and Mukhtar Rabiu of Garki/Babura Federal Constituency, Jigawa State.

No reason was given for the absence of Elegbeji Ayola, who won the Sagamu/Ikenne/Remo North Federal Constituency, Ogun State seat and Oyekunle Sunday, who won the Ibadan North seat.

Of the five, Mr Sunday is the only lawmaker produced by the PDP.

It was reported that the bill proposes granting the NDLEA the authority to retain a portion of the proceeds derived from drug-related crimes, contrary to the current legal framework.

This communication was conveyed to the House of Representatives during the plenary session by the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas.

President Tinubu, who cited Section 58, Subsection 4 of the 1999 Constitution, said that the bill, if signed, was a contravention of the aforementioned sections.

Tinubu mentioned that under existing law, all proceeds from crime must be deposited into the Confiscated and Forfeited Properties Account.

He explained that any disbursement to relevant agencies involved in recoveries must be made by the President, and only with the approval of the Federal Executive Council and the National Assembly.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, revealed this in a statement he signed titled, ‘President Tinubu confers GCON on House Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas.’

This comes amid controversies and heated exchanges between the Senate and the House of Representatives over the Speaker’s eligibility for a higher honour.

In his 64th Independence Anniversary Speech on 1 October, President Tinubu had conferred the Commander of the Federal Republic on the speaker and the deputy senate president.

This development led to a debate in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, calling on the President to confer a higher honour on the Speaker.

Onanuga said, President Tinubu was persuaded by the House of Representatives position and has decided to remedy the historical error and oversight.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, led the lawmakers who arrived at the refinery located in the Lekki Free Trade Zone in Lagos around 11am.

Africa’s richest man and President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, and top executives of the refineries received the lawmakers who took  a tour of the 650,000 barrels per day refinery.

The visit marks the second time federal lawmakers will visit the refinery in two months.

It also comes at a crucial time for the refinery, as it is scheduled to start the supply of petrol next month while also battling what it says are attempts by international oil companies to frustrate its access to crude oil needed for production.

In June, Senate President Godswill Akpabio led the leadership of the Senate on a tour of the refinery, praising the project and pledging support for it.

The lawmakers passed the resolution during the plenary session on Wednesday after the adoption of a motion sponsored by Jonathan Gaza from Nasarawa state.

In recent months, the apex bank has reportedly dismissed over 300 employees including directors, deputy directors, assistant directors, principal managers, senior managers, and lower-ranking officials.

While reacting to the development, Gaza said as part of an extensive reform, the CBN has been downsizing the workforce, which has affected close to 600 employees, including directors.

He stressed that there are significant concerns and controversies among the masses and stakeholders, including the affected employees and labor unions.

The motion, which was not debated, was unanimously adopted when it was put to a voice vote by Benjamin Kalu, the deputy speaker who was the presiding officer.

Consequently, the house mandated the committee on banking regulations and federal character to probe the circumstances behind the dismissal of the CBN staff and report back within four weeks for further legislative action.
