A Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has sentenced Samson Orijugo, the provost of Adonai Advanced Institute of Management, to three years in prison for forging a notification of results on the letterhead of Lagos State University, LASU.

Justice Modupe Nico-Clay convicted Orijugo on a two-count charge of forgery, ruling that the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt. According to the court, Orijugo forged the result notification in 2015 at Badagry for one John Chibuzor Okoro, a student of Adonai Institute, using LASU’s letterhead. The forged document falsely suggested that Adonai Institute was affiliated with LASU.

Orijugo was initially arraigned on December 2, 2021, and pleaded not guilty to the charges. His trial began on March 8, 2022. During the trial, the prosecution, led by Mrs. T. Olanrewaju-Daud, presented three witnesses and seven exhibits. Orijugo also testified in his defense.

In her judgment, Justice Nico-Clay stated that the notification of results submitted to the court had been forged and issued by Orijugo himself. She pointed out that Adonai Institute had no official ties to LASU, despite the false claims made to the student and his family.

The first prosecution witness, Patience Okoro, mother of the affected student, testified that Orijugo had introduced himself as the provost of an institution in the Benin Republic that was purportedly affiliated with LASU. She explained that after meeting Orijugo on May 12, 2012, in a commercial bus, he persuaded her to enroll her son at Adonai Institute by showing them transcripts on LASU letterhead, falsely claiming affiliation with the university.

Despite her initial doubts, Okoro later enrolled her son at the institute, making multiple payments for tuition, medical fees, and other charges, often without receipts. She stated that Orijugo repeatedly promised her son’s certificate would be issued during convocation but failed to deliver.

The forgery was only uncovered in 2018 when her son sought employment and the certificate was deemed fake. This revelation caused significant emotional distress for Okoro’s son.

Another key witness, Ojei Oziegbe, an Assistant Chief State Counsel at the Lagos State Ministry of Justice, testified that she had contacted LASU during the investigation and received confirmation that Adonai Institute was not affiliated with the university. The court admitted the letters as evidence.

The court rejected the defense put forward by Orijugo, which argued that the case concerned the issuance of a degree certificate, not the forged notification of result. Justice Nico-Clay emphasized that the central issue was the forgery of the result notification, which Orijugo had admitted to issuing.

The court also dismissed the argument that a LASU official needed to testify, stating that the documentary evidence provided by LASU was sufficient to prove the case. The judge noted that Orijugo, as the administrator of Adonai Institute, was aware that the claim of affiliation with LASU was false.

Justice Nico-Clay sentenced Orijugo to three years in prison on both counts of forgery, bringing a significant conclusion to a case that exposed fraudulent practices in the education sector.

Justice James Omotosho announced the date while ruling on the matter after Kanu failed to open his defence, having exhausted the six days allocated to him by the court to present his case.

According to Omotosho, “This court has given opportunity to the defendant under Section 36 as required by the constitution, and I will not allow this to continue.”

“It is based on this, without hesitation, that I say that the defendant has waived his right,” he added.

The judge held that since Kanu failed to utilise the opportunity granted to him to conduct his defence, he could not claim to have been denied his constitutionally guaranteed right to a fair hearing.

Meanwhile, Kanu on Friday made a motion challenging his trial on the grounds that terrorism was no longer an offence in Nigeria.

He said the earlier Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act had been repealed, and as such no valid charges against him.

Kanu maintained that there was no case against him and urged the court to dismiss the charges and allow him to go home.

He also claimed to be an Islamic cleric and that he carried out the act all alone.

Bello, who admitted that he killed Lawal because he needed human hands for money rituals, regretted that if only he had known another way to source the needed ingredient, he wouldn’t have killed her.

Justice Emeka Nwite found that the medical report, attached to Bello’s application was not signed by its maker as required.

Justice Nwite noted that the report, marked as Exhibit B, which was the medical report provided by a doctor, was not signed by its maker, and as such, could not be accorded any probative value.

The judge stressed that an unsigned document carries no weight in law and therefore, considered worthless.

He said, “In other words, Exhibit B is devoid of probative value and cannot be relied upon by the court.

“The defendant has failed to place sufficient materials before this court for his passport to be released for him to travel. Consequently, this application is hereby refused.”

The judge faulted the argument by the prosecution that the application constituted an abuse of court process.

He noted that Bello’s lawyer, Joseph Daudu had argued among others, that his client was a known hypertensive patient for about 15 years.

On the prosecution’s argument that Bello’s sureties were not involved in the defendant’s application, noting that the case was only between the prosecution and the defence.

At the resumed hearing, EFCC lawyer, Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, informed the court that, following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, the Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, was unable to meet with other parties to resolve outstanding issues in the settlement.

Jacobs further stated that the AGF had instructed him to request a short adjournment.

Mathew Onoja, who announced appearance for Nyako, did not object to the application for an adjournment, just as the other defence counsel also did not raise objections.

Justice Peter Lifu noted that since none of the defence counsel objected to the adjournment request, he was minded to grant it.

He also noted that since the court had taken judicial notice of the seven-day mourning period declared by the federal government, the case was adjourned until July 25.

The defendants, dragged before the court by the Federal Government represented by its counsel, Fatima Adesina, were arraigned on 3 counts of conspiracy to be in possession of firearms, unlawful possession of firearms, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

The offences committed were said to be contrary to and punishable under Sections 121 & 126 respectively of the Electoral Act, 2022.

Justice M. Awe, in his judgement, Certified True Copy dated July 11, 2025, obtained in Osogbo, found Yinusa Rahmon, Moshood Hamzat, Awotunde Gbenga, Adebayo Mutiu, Femi Taiwo and Najeem Omotuntun guilty of offences bordering on conspiracy and possession of firearms.

They were discharged on count three, for engaging in conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

Justice Awe, however, held that the prosecution could not prove that the defendants conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace in any public place.

The lawmaker disclosed this in a video shared on social media. She thanked her supporters for standing with her.

“I thank you for your support. I am glad we are victorious today.
“We shall resume in the Senate on Tuesday by the grace of God,” she stated.

Her comment followed the judgment by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, which declared her six-month suspension from the Senate as unconstitutional, excessive, and a violation of her constituents’ rights to representation.

Justice Binta Nyako, who presided over the matter, ruled that the suspension lacked constitutional backing and ordered the immediate reinstatement of Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The court, however, also found the senator guilty of contempt for a social media post described as a satirical apology addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
