When a hit song drops, the charts light up, the crowd learns the lyrics, cameras flash, awards are presented, and celebration follows. Then, it looks like one person’s victory.

But somewhere, maybe in a studio at 2am, someone else helped bring those lyrics to life. The person who shaped the hook, the one who fixed a weak verse, the one who arranged the songs, and so on.

In the global music industry, ghost writing is not new, it is just not always talked about. Take Drake for instance; when an allegation surfaced on social media that Quentin Miller, a recording artist also a songwriter for other artists, had contributed heavily to his lyrics, it sparked one of hip-hop’s most heated debates. The controversy later deepened during Quentin Miller’s conversation with DJ Vlad about how Drake did not pay enough for the work he did as a ghostwriter for drake in 2015.

There is Nicki Minaj, who has openly credited writers in some of her projects showing that collaboration does not always mean deception.

In R&B, the songwriting camps are normal. Terius Youngdell Nash also known as The-Dream built his career writing for megastars like Beyoncé, before becoming an artist himself. The same goes for Ne-Yo, an American singer, songwriter, and record producer, who wrote major hits before stepping fully into the spotlight.

Back at home in Nigeria, the narrative is quieter, but it exists. Most artists do not like to openly admit that someone else helped write their songs, but Afrobeats is now global with international deals and collaborations, which makes Songwriting more structured.

An artist like Simi is respected for her writing skills not just for herself but for others; she is a highly accomplished singer-songwriter and sound engineer, who has written for several artists, most notably her husband, Adekunle Gold. She has been a key player in writing, mixing, and mastering many of his tracks, with notable contributions to his albums and hits like “Look What You Made Me Do,” “Catch Me If You Can,” “Mercy,” “AG Baby,” and “Call On Me”.

Tobechukwu Victor Okoh, widely known as Peruzzi has been credited for contributing to songs within his label, Davido Music World Wide. He has written numerous hits, primarily for Davido, also claiming to have penned over 252 songs for various artists in the Nigerian music industry. Key songs he wrote or co-wrote for Davido include “Unavailable”, “Risky”, “Assurance”, “Flora My Flower”, “Fia” and “Nwa Baby”.

Popular singer Raoul John Njeng-Njeng, known as Skales, has claimed he wrote several hit songs like “Wiz Party” for fellow artist Wizkid during their time at Empire Mates Entertainment (EME).

Cobhams Asuquo, is also a renowned Nigerian producer and songwriter who has written, produced, and arranged songs for a wide array of prominent artists, most notably Asa (including “Fire on the Mountain,” “Jailer,” and “Bibanke”). He has also written for Banky W, Timi Dakolo (“Iyawo Mi,” “Wish Me Well”), Omawumi, Waje, Bez, Flavour, Korede Bello, and Tiwa Savage.

In Afrobeats, maybe because of the nature of our society, ghostwriting carries stigma. Fans want to believe their favorite artist lived every word they sang. Admitting you had help can feel risky, even when it is a clear fact that music today is mostly teamwork.

There is a difference between co-writing and ghostwriting. Co-writing means your name is in the credits. Ghostwriting means it is not. Some writers accept money upfront. Some do it for connections. Some do it for loyalty. It is often a trade, visibility for service, or upfront payment for service.

The truth is most hit songs are team efforts. A producer builds the beat, a writer sharpens the hook, someone suggests a better line. But when the song blows up, only one face trends online.

Many ghostwriters are fine with staying out of the spotlight, no public pressure, no social media drama, just their work and their pay. Others eventually speak up because they want recognition too.

Fans are now paying more attention to credits. People are asking who really wrote that song. Still, many writers remain in the background. Maybe the real question is simple; if a song makes you cry, fall in love, or heal, does it really matter who wrote it?

Behind every hit song is a room full of people creating something together. When the show ends and the applause fades, somewhere a writer smiles quietly, knowing the world connected to words they helped create. For some, that personal satisfaction is enough, but for some, money and fame has to follow.
