The Federal Road Safety Corps said it is awaiting the outcome of a comprehensive technical investigation into the road crash involving Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua, which occurred in Ogun State.

FRSC spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, said the corps had conducted an initial professional assessment at the scene. He stressed, however, that only a full technical report would determine the final cause of the crash.

Preliminary assessments by the corps’ crash observatory have, however, identified excessive speed as a major contributing factor.

The accident occurred around 12 noon near the Sinoma axis of Sagamu, Ogun State, involving a black Lexus SUV and a stationary red Sinotruck.

According to the FRSC, five adult males were involved in the crash. Two of them, identified as Joshua’s friends, died instantly. One person sustained injuries, while two others escaped unhurt. Joshua reportedly survived the crash with minor injuries.

Ogungbemide explained that officers from the crash observatory, comprising experienced safety experts, examined the crash site shortly after the incident and drew preliminary conclusions based on impact analysis and road configuration.

“When you look at the impact of that crash, definitely you know that whoever must have been operating under the speed limit as put in place by the Federal Government wouldn’t have had such an impact,” he said.

Ogungbemide noted that the truck involved in the crash was parked on the shoulder of the road and was not reported to have broken down at the location.

“The information reaching us is that it is not that the vehicle broke down there. Maybe the man parked there, which was on the shoulder of the road,” he said.

According to him, although no speed-measuring device was actively recording data at the exact point of the crash, trained officers could infer likely speed from the level of damage and the force of impact.

“At that moment, there was no technical equipment to actually confirm the speed at which the vehicle was going.

He added that the maximum speed limit on highways is 100 kilometres per hour, noting that crashes occurring within that limit are less likely to result in severe consequences.

“The push and the impact involving that jeep and the parked truck give you a better guess, pending the technical investigation we are looking at,” Ogungbemide said.

The FRSC spokesperson also addressed concerns about emergency response, stating that patrol teams arrived at the scene within three minutes of the crash.

Ogungbemide said, “The response time was three minutes,” adding, “That corridor where this crash occurred, we have more than five emergency ambulance points.”

On Joshua’s condition, Ogungbemide said the boxer was responsive at the scene and received prompt assistance.

He confirmed that the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, had directed that the technical investigation be concluded and the findings communicated to the public.

“The moment they conclude, they will reach out to members of the public,” he said.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a stern warning to celebrities, content creators, and social media influencers against reckless road use, saying such behaviour endangers lives and undermines road safety efforts.

The warning followed a viral video showing popular TikTok streamer Habeeb Hamzat, known as Peller, livestreaming while driving, an act that reportedly led to a road traffic crash.

In a statement signed by FRSC spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, described the act as unlawful and dangerous, stressing that fame does not exempt anyone from traffic laws.

Mohammed said livestreaming or using a phone while driving violates road traffic regulations and poses serious risks to other road users.

He directed the Lagos State Sector Commander to commence prosecution for reckless driving, use of phones while driving, and distracted driving.

The corps marshal also urged entertainment industry bodies, influencer groups and content creator communities to promote responsible conduct among their members, noting that celebrities have strong influence over young Nigerians.

The Corps said the new system will eliminate delays and temporary licences, allowing applicants to receive their permanent licence immediately after biometric capture. The technology uses advanced contactless fingerprint scanners and is synchronised with the National Identification Number (NIN) database for seamless identity verification.

FRSC Marshal Shehu Mohammed said the development is part of ongoing reforms to streamline the licencing process. “Once you reach the point of capture, you get your driver’s licence instantly. There will no longer be a waiting period or issuance of temporary licences,” he said.

The new process is designed to integrate with existing driving schools, Vehicle Inspection Offices, and other certification bodies to ensure a one-stop system for motorists. The Corps says the move will reduce bureaucracy and curb identity fraud.

Deputy Corps Marshal Aliyu Datsama confirmed that the contactless system is already operational and will be rolled out nationwide. He revealed that the Corps had reduced a backlog of 800,000 unprocessed licences to 400,000, with a current daily production rate of 40,000 licences.

Datsama also urged Nigerians who have completed their biometric capture to collect their licences, noting that over 206,000 remain unclaimed across the country.

The FRSC said it has upgraded its printing facility to meet increasing demand and is working with state governments, VIOs, and revenue agencies to ensure smooth implementation nationwide.

While speaking during the agency’s Customer Service Week celebration at the FRSC headquarters in Jos, Plateau State, the Sector Commander, Olajide Mogaji, expressed concern over reports that some medical facilities still refuse to admit accident victims despite clear legal directives.

“We are aware of complaints about some hospitals refusing to treat crash victims when brought in for emergency care. This is not only wrong but against the law. The government’s position is clear: treat first, then address other formalities,” Mogaji said.

He, however, noted that hospitals in Plateau State have generally complied with the directive, commending them for their cooperation in saving lives.

“We don’t have many such cases here in Plateau. Many hospitals have shown commitment by providing immediate care to crash victims,” he added.

Mogaji warned that there are penalties for medical institutions that violate this directive and urged continued prioritisation of emergency care for accident victims.

“We’re using this opportunity to plead with all hospitals: do not reject road crash victims. Prioritise their treatment—it could mean the difference between life and death,” he stressed.

The Sector Commander also spoke on the challenges faced by FRSC personnel during rescue operations, particularly security risks, and reiterated the Corps’ longstanding call for its operatives to be armed for self-defense.

“Often, our rescue teams face dangerous situations. This is why we are advocating for permission to bear arms during operations,” Mogaji said.

With increased traffic expected during the final months of the year, often referred to as the “ember months,” the FRSC is ramping up its efforts to curb road crashes.

They were arraigned before Senior Magistrate A.0. Ayilara on 9th August 2025, facing three-count charges of obstruction of public highway, conspiracy, and breach of public peace.

The State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps in a statement released by its Sector Commander, Leye Adegboyega announced the arrest, saying it is due to an incident of attempted mob action on one of its patrol teams that occurred on Saturday 9th August.

The said patrol team, detailed along Osogbo-Sekona route and stationed near the main gate of the Government Secretariat, Abere, sighted a mini truck whose driver was not on seatbelt as required by law, they flagged down the vehicle, and appropriately issued a FRSC Notice of Offence ticket for the violation and the driver’s licence of the driver was confiscated pending payment for the fine into the Government Treasury Single Account.

According to the statement, the offender, however, refused to collect the ticket and instead, being a member of the Allied Truck Transport Association of Nigeria, ATTAN, mobilized his union members to the scene, blocking the road, causing serious obstruction and disrupting public peace, while preventing the team from carrying on with its lawful duty.

Following the barrage of provocative utterances and threats, three of the culprits were eventually arrested by the Police and the case was formally documented at the Nigeria Police Force, Ataoja Division, Osogbo, for further investigation.

The arrested transport union members, Olatunde Abioye, Abdul-lateef Raheem and Abdullazeez Mudasiru, have been granted bail in the sum of one million naira each in like sum and sureties with reasonable means within the jurisdiction of the Court.

The case was adjourned to 25 September 2025 for trial.
