Caprio, who retired in 2023 after nearly four decades on the bench, became widely admired for his kindhearted approach to justice. His reality TV show, Caught in Providence, which began in 2000, showcased his unique style, often dismissing fines for struggling families or even asking children to help decide traffic violation cases. Clips from the show went viral worldwide, earning him the nickname, “the nicest judge in the world.”

“It is with profound sadness that I share the news that my father passed away today, peacefully, after a courageous battle with cancer,” his son, David Caprio, said in a video posted on the judge’s social media page.

Just a day before his death, Caprio had shared a video from his hospital bed, asking fans for prayers following a health setback.

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee paid tribute, calling him “a symbol of empathy on the bench” and ordering state flags to fly at half-staff in his honor.

“He will be remembered not only as a respected judge, but as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend,” his family said in a statement.
