According to intelligence reports, the FCCPC team had aimed to crack down on traders allegedly rebaging rice in various brand names and reproducing rice bags from firms that have left Nigeria since 2015, including Royal Stallion and Caprice rice.

The FCCPC alleged that rice bagged in the names of Royal Stallion, Mama Gold and Caprice companies were still being sold.

FCCPC said, “Our surveillance has revealed this deceptive practice is potentially misleading consumers and violating consumer protection law.”

Despite evidence of alleged offences, the traders refused to cooperate with FCCPC officials, citing lack of notification to the market leader.

The resistance highlighted tensions between regulators and market stakeholders.

But, despite the resistance, the FCCPC team sealed a shop involved in the reproduction.

The commission made this known in a statement today where FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, said the regulator had ordered MultiChoice’s Chief Executive Officer to appear at its headquarters on February 27 for an investigative hearing.

The summons comes after the pay-TV announced on Monday a 21 per cent increase in the subscription fee for its DStv Compact package, raising the price from N15,700 to N19,000 among other price adjustments.

The announcement triggered widespread criticism from subscribers, many of whom took to social media to express frustration over frequent price hikes.

The consumer watchdog, in its statement, expressed concerns over the recurring unilateral price increases, warning that such actions raise serious questions about fairness, market abuse, and potential anti-competitive practices..

The FCCPC also confirmed that it is engaging the sector regulator and other relevant agencies to ensure fair competition and stronger consumer protection in Nigeria’s pay-TV industry.

A statement by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission ,FCCPC,  said the Executive Vice-Chairman of the FCCPC, Tunji Bello, gave the order at a one-day stakeholders’ engagement on exploitative pricing in Abuja.

According to Bello, the commission will begin enforcement after the expiration of the notice.

He said the meeting was to address the growing trend of unreasonable pricing of consumer goods and services and unwholesome practices of market associations.

Bello said the issue of critical national importance of the day is the growing trend of unreasonable pricing of consumer goods and services across the country, and the unwholesome practice of market associations engaged in price fixing.

This is as the National Bureau of Statistics ,NBS, recently pegged the inflation rate at 33.40 per cent, with the food inflation at over 40 per cent.

The high inflation rate has worsened since President Bola Tinubu on May 29, 2023, pronounced an end to fuel subsidies.

Explaining further, FCCPC also said it would not fail to invoke the full weight of the law on defaulters.
