The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced new dates for the Osun State governorship election and the 2027 general elections.

INEC disclosed this in a statement signed by the National Commissioner, Chairman, Information, and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, noting that the governorship election in Osun State will now hold on Saturday, August 15, 2026, instead of August 8, 2026. The commission explained that the change was made to adjust the election timetable and ensure proper preparations.

INEC also moved the dates for the 2027 general elections forward.

According to the new schedule, Presidential and National Assembly elections will now hold on Saturday, January 16, 2027, overnorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will take place on Saturday, February 6, 2027.

The elections were earlier planned for February and March 2027, but have now been brought forward by several weeks.

According to INEC, the revised dates are consistent with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and the Electoral Act, 2026.

The Commission calls on all stakeholders to cooperate in ensuring peaceful, credible and inclusive elections that reflect the sovereign will of the Nigerian people.

IPAC Secretary and Lagos State Chairperson of the Action People’s Party, Abiola Adeyemi, congratulated Amupitan while speaking with journalists in Lagos, urging the new INEC chairman to enhance the integrity of elections and build confidence in the electoral system.

According to her, Nigerians are disenchanted with the electoral process, hence the recurrent voter apathy during elections.

Adeyemi said: “We expect the newly appointed INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan champion and strengthen electoral reforms. Let the process be transparent and let election results reflect the will of the people.

“The biggest task before him is the restoration of public confidence in the electoral process, because this is long gone.

The IPAC scribe also advised the new INEC boss to leverage innovations, like the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System and others, to eliminate all manipulative tendencies in elections.

She said that the electoral reforms that would make Nigerians aspire, contest and vote without intimidation were needed to bring back public confidence.

Adeyemi urged the new INEC helmsman to find a way of addressing the nagging problem of vote buying and selling during elections.

Amupitan’s appointment followed the tenure expiration of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who had led the nation’s electoral body for a statutory two-term tenure of five years each since November 2015.

Speaking at a campaign rally, Governor Yusuf highlighted his administration’s achievements in education, healthcare, and youth and women empowerment. He noted the construction of classrooms, sponsorship of students for local and international studies, and the empowerment of thousands of women with ₦50,000 monthly start-up capital.

“In just two years, we’ve significantly improved lives across these communities,” Yusuf stated. “Don’t allow a return to the poor governance of the past.”

He announced key projects in the 2025 state budget, including a major road linking Mashatsa, Gwarzo, Shanono, and Tanyawa, the upgrade of Shanono Hospital to a general hospital, and water supply pipelines for the constituency.

The governor urged voters to elect NNPP candidates Ali Kiyawa (Bagwai/Shanono) and Yusuf Maigado (Ghari/Tanyawa) to ensure continuity of “people-oriented governance.”

Party leaders, including the deputy governor, NNPP state chairman, and local government chairpersons, echoed the call, asking voters to reject the APC’s previous “wasteful years” and support NNPP’s development agenda.

Key eastern cities, including Benghazi, Sirte, and Tobruk have rejected the vote, exposing ongoing tensions between rival administrations in Tripoli and the east. The UN mission in Libya (UNSMIL) described the elections as “essential to uphold democratic governance” but warned that insecurity and attacks on electoral offices could undermine the process.

Eleven constituencies in the east and south were suspended by the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) due to administrative issues and local pressure. Additionally, in some areas near Tripoli, voting was postponed due to problems with voter card distribution.

In a recent attack, armed men stormed the HNEC office in Zliten, injuring several people. UNSMIL condemned the violence as an attempt to intimidate voters and disrupt the democratic process.

Since the fall of Moamer Kadhafi in 2011, Libya has remained fractured between the UN-recognised government in Tripoli and a rival administration backed by military commander Khalifa Haftar. National elections have been repeatedly delayed, most recently in 2021.

Despite setbacks, many Libyans view the municipal vote as a chance to have a say in local governance. “Libyans need to vote and to have the freedom to choose without fear,” said Esraa Abdelmonem, a voter from western Libya.

Observers say the outcome will serve as a barometer for Libya’s readiness to embrace peaceful, democratic transitions.

Baba-Ahmed recalled his political journey, stating moments where he chose to step back from important contests in order to expand national unity, while featuring on National Television.

According to him, “I welcome the idea of power remaining in the South. That’s why, if you recall, I was inspired to run for the presidency in 2019, and in 2023, I served under His Excellency, Peter Obi as vice-presidential candidate.

“Before that, I attempted a governorship bid in Kaduna but chose to withdraw.”

He went on to praise Peter Obi and Nyesom Wike for demonstrating restraint despite their political capital.
