Malami and his son are also accused of engaging in an alleged conduct in preparation to commit an act of terrorism by having in their possession and without a licence, a Sturm Magnum 17-0101 firearm, Sixteen (16) Redstar AAA 5’20 live rounds of Cartridges and Twenty-Seven (27) expended Redstar AAA 5’20 Cartridges.

In the charge, DSS counsel A.M. Danalami outlined that Onukwume’s actions violated several legal provisions, including Sections 46A(1) and 59(1) of the Criminal Code Act, as well as Section 24(1)(b) of the amended Cybercrimes Act, 2024.

Among the controversial statements attributed to Onukwume, one read, “A coup in Nigeria is needed. Dispose of APC, suspend the Nigerian government, and join the AES. That is all we need now.” Another post reportedly stated, “It will happen eventually, Nigerians. The military needs your support now! Only they can save this country.” Onukwume also allegedly wrote, “Tinubu has to go and APC has to die for Nigeria to have any semblance of normal life.”

He further dismissed the power of elections, claiming, “If you think your stupid votes can remove Tinubu, I’m here to tell you that you’re a fool.”

The DSS highlighted that these posts were repeatedly shared on Onukwume’s account, intensifying concerns over his calls for insurrection.

Onukwume, a resident of Umusayo Layout in Oyigbo Local Government Area, Rivers State, is expected to be arraigned later this week.

This incident comes amid rising tensions following reports in October of an alleged military plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s government.

While these reports sparked public outrage, with senior lawyers, civil society groups, and retired military officers condemning any attempts to undermine Nigeria’s democracy, the Defence Headquarters has dismissed the coup rumors, stating there were no plans or detentions related to a military takeover.

“As part of the ongoing reforms in the Department of State Services, the public is hereby informed that a total of 115 personnel have been dismissed over a period,” the statement read.

The agency cautioned that, despite earlier disclaimers issued on two dismissed operatives Barry Donald and Victor Onyedikachi Godwin some former staff continue to pose as active personnel to defraud unsuspecting individuals.

“Members of the public are therefore advised to desist from any official dealing with these individuals who have been dismissed by the service,” it added.
The DSS noted that the identities of the dismissed personnel had been published on its website for clarity.

In October, the service had issued disclaimers on Donald and Godwin, who were alleged to have used the agency’s name to defraud citizens. Both men have been arrested and will be prosecuted, according to the DSS.

Recall that Meranda became the Lagos legislature’s first female speaker on January 13, 2025, after Obasa’s removal.

Obasa was abroad when replaced, and all principal positions and committees were dissolved following his impeachment.
