The tragic incident occurred on 22 September at Wellington Bassey Barracks, Ibagwa, Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, where Lt. Haruna served as the Regimental Medical Officer of the 6 Battalion.

Reports stated that the couple married in April this year in Jos, Plateau State, had been experiencing frequent disputes, allegedly over infidelity. The confrontation on the night of the incident reportedly escalated, culminating in the attack while Haruna was asleep. His wife allegedly poured petrol on him and set him ablaze.

Haruna, originally from Benue State, sustained severe burns and was initially treated at a barracks clinic before being transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, UUTH. Despite medical efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries.

Commissioned into the Nigerian Army in 2024 after completing his medical training, Lt. Haruna’s death has drawn widespread condemnation.

In a statement, the Nigerian Army expressed deep sorrow over the officer’s death and denounced the act of domestic violence.

“The Nigerian Army strongly condemns this act of domestic violence, recognising the imperative of peaceful coexistence and respect within families,” said Lieutenant Colonel Lawal Muhammed, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations.

He added that preliminary investigations indicate the incident followed a heated domestic argument and emphasized the Army’s commitment to addressing domestic violence and fostering respectful family relationships.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of Lieutenant Haruna,” the statement continued, urging the public to remain calm as the military police continue their investigation.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether Retyit Dalong has been taken into custody or charged in connection with the incident.

The deceased’s husband, Onyekachi Eze, in a video on social media, was accompanied to the Imo Police Command by popular Nollywood producer, Stanley Ontop, to report the incident.

Eze disclosed that the incident happened at Lebechi Hospital in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

Narrating the incident, Eze said, “I carried my wife to the hospital when she was in labor, and the doctor said she needed to undergo an operation because she was bleeding.

“So the female doctor called another doctor to come and operate on her. Right in my presence, they were using their phones to watch a YouTube video on how to perform surgery, and I lost my wife and my baby during the process.”

Shortly after the report, Stanley shared an updated video showing how the owner of the hospital was arrested by the police after the doctors absconded.

CS is the surgical delivery of a baby through a cut made in the birth parent’s abdomen and uterus.

The Minister of State for Health, Tunji Alausa, made the call in Kaduna during a visit to the National Eye Centre.

According to Alausa, negotiations are ongoing to ensure the safety of their kidnapped colleague, Ganiyat Popoola.

The minister said the Federal Government and security agencies were working hard to rescue Popoola.

The minister said that he had held a meeting with the leadership of NARD over the situation to convince them to call off the strike because it would worsen the situation.

Alausa added that the kidnappers kept changing their demands every moment, but assured that security agencies were working hard to see that she was safely rescued.

It would be recalled  that the members of the association began a seven-day warning strike to push for the rescue of a Kaduna-based doctor, Ganiyat Popoola.

Popoola, a staff of the centre, was kidnapped in December, 2023 and has now spent about nine months in the kidnappers’ den.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the association, National Eye Centre, Ibrahim Mohammed, told newsmen that the strike was still on.

He said the medical and dental consultants had joined them in the strike and it was a directive from the national body.
