According to reports, the incident occurred when the teenager became stranded on a bus in West Yorkshire. Both the victim and the student were on a night bus service that unexpectedly stopped in Morley, Leeds, while they both needed to get home to Bradford on March 25.

“The 29-year-old postgraduate student tricked her into sharing a taxi before luring her into his accommodation and attacking her in a locked toilet,” the report stated.

Okoronta, originally from Nigeria, must also serve three years on an extended licence and register as a sex offender for the rest of his life,” the report added.

According to the prosecution, the victim’s phone battery had died after she got off the bus, and Okoronta offered to share a taxi to Bradford Interchange.

However, the taxi went to his flat instead, where he persuaded her to go inside and then locked her in a toilet.
After the assault, the report noted that the teenager managed to escape, stopped a passerby, and used their phone to call the police.

In a victim impact statement read in court, the teenager stated, “This incident has turned my life upside down. I have flashbacks of what happened to me. I have nightmares one minute I feel fine, and the next minute it all comes back.”

Judge Sophie McKone told the defendant, “I am satisfied that when you asked if she wanted to share your taxi to Bradford, you formulated a plan to get her back to your flat, where you could rape her.
“You concocted a reason for her to come into your flat. You are, I am clear, a dangerous sexual predator.”

West Yorkshire Police Detective Constable Sue Sutcliffe, the report said, commended the survivor.
“I would like to commend the victim in this case for her immense bravery in coming forward straight away to report this horrific crime.

“I would urge anyone who has been the victim of a sexual offence to please report it to us so we can take action,” she said.

This latest case comes amid increasing reports of Nigerians abroad being convicted for sexual offences.

This comes as a document from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ICE, and Removal Operations showed that about 3,690 Nigerians in the US face deportation.

The document, titled ‘Non-citizens on the ICE Non-Detained Docket with Final Orders of Removal by Country of Citizenship,’ shows that Mexico and El Salvador top the list of nations facing the highest number of deportations, with 252,044 and 203,822.

As revealed in the document, 1,445,549 non-citizens were on ICE’s non-detained docket with final removal orders as of November 24, 2024.

The development comes as the Trump-led administration swung into action with its anti-illegal immigrant policies upon his inauguration on January 20, 2025.

In a follow-up to Trump’s tough stance against illegal immigrants, the US Justice Department also threatened to prosecute local and state authorities that failed to comply with immigration directives.

Consequently, 538 illegal immigrants were deported from the United States on January 23.

Still, Trump’s press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, disclosed on her official X handle that the largest deportation operation in history was underway.

Reacting, a Nigerian in Florida who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that many illegal immigrants have been living in fear since the emergence of Trump.

According to him, it is believed that African illegal immigrants may be next for Trump’s clampdown.

He noted that due to fear, many illegal immigrants of African descent, especially Nigerians, have stopped working to avoid being arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ICE agents.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s federal government has said a total of 201 Nigerians are currently in the custody of the US authorities and are ready for deportation.

However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the date and time of their deportation had not been communicated to the Federal Government.

The acting spokesperson for the ministry, Kimiebi Ebienfa, stated that for Nigerians to be deported, the established diplomatic practice was to officially communicate such intentions to the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, DC.

An immigration tribunal has ruled that the Adegboyega should be deported back to his native, Nigeria, after investigations exposed misuse of funds by his church.

His church was shut down after failing to properly account for more than £1.87 million of outgoings and operating without transparency.

He claimed deportation would breach his right under the European Convention of Human Rights, ECHR, to family life – having married a British woman, adding that the attempt to remove him by the Home Office failed to take account of his community work.

The  Pastor’s legal team claimed that he had intervened in the lives of many hundreds of young people, predominantly from the black communities in London, to lead them away from trouble.

He claimed his work had been lauded by politicians including Boris Johnson and senior figures within the Metropolitan Police, although no testimony by them was submitted to the court. He said that without his presence in London, projects that he had masterminded would fall apart or reduce in size.

However, the tribunal was told the Home Office contended that all is not as it seems.

According to the judgment, various manifestations of the church have been closed down, by either the Charity Commission or the High Court, because of concerns over its finances and lack of transparency.

Former members of the church have alleged that it is a cult, in which impoverished young people are encouraged to do anything they can to donate money, including taking out large loans, committing benefit fraud, and even selling their blood.

They also alleged that the church leadership leads lavish lifestyles and there have reportedly been instances of abuse.

Adegboyega is said to have allegedly lived in the UK unlawfully since overstaying on a visitor’s visa that allowed him to enter Britain in 2005. In 2019, he applied for leave to remain under ECHR’s right to a family life.

In the tribunal, Adegboyega maintained no one had ever faced criminal charges over his church’s finances, and that many of the attacks on him were politically motivated, saying that claims it was a cult were groundless.

The tribunal also found the pastor’s evidence to be hyperbolic in many instances and had sought to grossly inflate his influence. It also found it implausible that the pastor has the time to undertake all the work personally.
