The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has instructed his lawyers to withdraw all ongoing defamation lawsuits against several individuals, saying he was moved by counsel during a New Year Mass.

Speaking at the Sacred Heart Parish in Uyo, Akpabio revealed that he had filed nearly nine lawsuits against people he accused of defaming him.

He said, “I had almost nine cases in court against some individuals who defamed me, who lied against me, who slandered my name.

“But I listened to the priest and suddenly realised he was talking to me, so I hereby direct my solicitor to withdraw all lawsuits against them.”

In 2025, Akpabio had filed several high-profile defamation lawsuits, including one against colleague Senator Natasha Akpoti‑Uduaghan.

In late 2025, Akpabio filed a N200 billion defamation lawsuit against her over allegations of sexual harassment, which he denied and urged her to substantiate in court.

Earlier in the year, Akpabio’s wife also filed defamation suits against Akpoti‑Uduaghan over claims she said had harmed her family’s reputation.

Relations between the two lawmakers soured after Akpoti‑Uduaghan accused Akpabio of influencing her suspension from the Senate in March 2025, following her public allegations of misconduct.

The Senator had previously challenged actions taken against her in court, including a N100 billion defamation suit she filed against Akpabio and other defendants over alleged remarks that she said damaged her reputation.

With the announcement, Akpabio has formally ended all pending legal disputes arising from defamation claims, signalling closure to the publicised litigations as the year begins.

She resisted the relocation, leading to a confrontation between her and the Senate President.

However, in a suit filed before the Federal Capital Territory High Court on 25 February 2025, the President of the Senate, the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and the Senior Legislative Aide to the Senate President, Mfon Patrick, were listed as the second and third defendants.

In the suit,  Akpoti-Uduaghan, through her lawyer, Victor Giwa, alleged that defamatory statements were made by the Senate President and published by his aide on Facebook.

According to him, the post, titled “Is the Local Content Committee of the Senate Natasha’s Birthright?” included a statement suggesting that Akpoti-Uduaghan believed being a lawmaker was only about pancaking her face and wearing transparent outfits to the chambers.

Giwa argued that the statement was defamatory, provocative, and disparaging, lowering his client’s dignity in the eyes of her colleagues and the public.

According to her, Akpabio stated in a declaration said that the Kogi lawmaker, who knows nothing about legislative rules, thinks being a lawmaker is all about pancaking her face and wearing transparent outfits to the chambers.

She also urged the court to restrain the defendants and their associates from making further defamatory statements against her on any platform.

Furthermore, Akpoti-Uduaghan asked the court to order the defendants to pay her N100 billion in general damages and N300 million as litigation costs.

She prayed an order for the payment of the sum of N100,000,000,000 as general damages as well as  the payment of the sum of N300,000,000 as the cost of action.

The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, has refuted an allegation made by a former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, that he is planning to tarnish his reputation because of his 2031 presidential ambition.

Recall that El-Rufai, in an interview earlier, accused Ribadu of collaborating with Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission to destroy his image.

Reacting to the allegation in a statement issued via his official X handle late Monday, Ribadu said he is not collaborating with anyone to disparage or malign El-Rufai in any way.

The NSA said he has never discussed running for president in 2031 with anybody, stressing that all his focus and energy are geared toward the success of the Bola Tinubu administration and the nation’s advancement.

He, therefore, urged the public to disregard El-rufai’s statements against him.

Report has it that the case which emanated from comments made by Farotimi in an interview about his book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System, particularly concerning Afe Babalola, was formally withdrawn in court.

At the hearing, counsel for the complainant, Samson Osobu, informed the court that the prosecution had filed a notice of discontinuance citing Section 108(1)(2)(a) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 as the basis for the withdrawal.

He further explained that the decision to withdraw the case followed interventions by well-meaning Nigerians and a request from the nominal complainant, Afe Babalola, to discontinue the matter.

Counsel for the defendant, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, SAN, did not oppose the withdrawal.

Consequently, the Presiding Judge, Babs Kuewumi struck out the case.

While speaking to journalists after the ruling, Olumide-Fusika noted that the case had been concluded in Ado Ekiti but declined to comment on related matters pending in courts across Lagos, Ibadan, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and the Magistrate Court in Ado Ekiti.

He also stated that he had advised Farotimi against granting press interviews on the matter.

The withdrawal of the suit follows the intervention of prominent traditional rulers, led by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.

Afe Babalola had on Monday announced that he would instruct his lawyers to withdraw the defamation charges against Farotimi.
