Roberts was sent-off just eight minutes into today’s FA Cup fifth round tie, which Palace won 3-1, after catching Mateta’s head with his boot as he raced out to clear the ball.

Referee Michael Oliver only issued a red card after a Video assistant referee, VAR, review.

Mateta received lengthy treatment, including oxygen, on the pitch before being stretchered to an ambulance and transported to a hospital.

Palace manager, Oliver Glasner, confirmed Mateta is conscious but has suffered a serious injury to his ear, adding that although it’s a great win and into the quarter-finals, but when one loses a player, especially with a foul like this, one has two different feelings in your stomach.

Mateta had scored eight goals in his previous nine games and has 15 in total for Palace this season.

The 27-year-old also netted five times as France won silver at the Paris Olympics last year.

Parish drew comparisons to the famous clash between German goalkeeper Toni Schumacher and French forward Patrick Battiston at the 1982 World Cup.

Palace made use of the man advantage for virtually the whole game to book their place in the quarter-finals.

At a press conference about the 23-year-old England international’s condition, Arteta said it is not looking good, adding that he will be out for many weeks.

Saka was filmed leaving Selhurst Park on crutches on Saturday, souring a comprehensive second win over the Eagles in four days.

He also revealed that Raheem Sterling had injured his knee and would be out for many weeks.

When asked if there were fears Saka would not return before the end of the season, Arteta said there is no fear, saying he is very optimistic Saka will be back before the end of the season.

The Spaniard said it was part of the development of a player.

Saka is a crucial cog in Arsenal’s attack, scoring five Premier League goals and providing 10 assists this season, and his absence will be keenly felt.

Arteta further said he was putting some ideas together about how to cope in the winger’s absence.

Arsenal, who have finished as Premier League runners-up over the past two seasons, host relegation-threatened Ipswich on Friday.

The Gunners are third in the Premier League table, six points behind leaders Liverpool having played a game more.
