According to counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama, the corps members, including 36 males and 38 females, were stranded after their buses broke down near a known kidnapping hotspot. A military patrol team was quickly deployed after troops monitoring a CCTV system detected unusual movement involving three buses in the area.

On arrival, the soldiers found the corps members stranded and immediately secured their safety, preventing what could have been an abduction attempt by Boko Haram or Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) insurgents.

The report stated that the corps members had earlier been escorted from Maiduguri to Damaturu by troops of the 7 Division Garrison but continued their journey to Hawul Local Government Area without notifying Sector 2 headquarters or requesting further military escort.

The rescued corps members are currently being sheltered at the Buratai military base while arrangements are being made for their safe onward movement.

This incident follows a similar case in which an NYSC member, Chiamaka Obi, was abducted along the Niger–Onitsha expressway while returning home from service.

According to Uba, the 135 Special Forces Battalion, operating under Sector 2 of OPHK, encountered a group of Boko Haram and ISWAP militants at Dutse Kura after discovering that the terrorists were abducting civilians and stealing vehicles along the Buratai–Kamuya Road.

“The troops swiftly responded, thwarting the attack and pursuing the terrorists towards Mangari,” Uba explained. “In a follow-up encounter near a terrorist camp, the troops overpowered the insurgents, forcing them to flee in disarray. A subsequent search of the area led to the discovery of 11 makeshift terrorist structures and the rescue of 86 hostages, including men, women, and children.”

The operation also resulted in the seizure of several items from the terrorists, including an AK-47 rifle, five magazines with 73 rounds of ammunition, four PKT ammunition belts, five civilian vehicles, five motorcycles, eight bicycles, and two logistics tricycles. The terrorists’ camp was destroyed during clearance operations.

The statement emphasized that no casualties were reported among the troops during these operations. The Military High Command commended the bravery and professionalism of the soldiers and urged Operation Hadin Kai to continue its efforts to deny terrorists the freedom to operate in the region.

A combined force of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms and strike aircraft tracked terrorist movements near Banki. Real-time updates enabled precision airstrikes in three successive waves, targeting the terrorists’ movement routes and assembly points.

“Post-strike surveillance confirmed the neutralisation of over 25 terrorists, with no further threats observed,” the statement said.

According to him, the strike targeted an enclave west of Zuwa, identified through intelligence and surveillance as a hideout for fighters and commanders linked to recent attacks around Bitta, in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.

Ejodame stated that the airstrike destroyed structures used by the insurgents and degraded their operational capacity.

“The Nigerian Air Force, through the Air Component under the Joint Task Force North-East of Operation Hadin Kai, has once again demonstrated its precision, reach, and resolve in the fight against terrorism. On 3 September 2025, a carefully planned and executed air interdiction mission struck a newly identified terrorist enclave west of Zuwa in the Sambisa general area.

“The Nigerian Air Force continues to stand as a symbol of vigilance, professionalism, and decisive airpower in defence of national security. Every successful strike brings Nigeria one step closer to lasting peace”, the statement read.

The Sambisa Forest, is a vast area in the North-East, has served as a stronghold for Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province fighters since the insurgency began in 2009.

The Nigerian military has launched repeated operations in the area over the years as part of efforts to weaken the groups’ presence.

The attack was confirmed to have occurred on Sunday around 2:30 p.m. at the Fadana-Garuwa River in Duji Ward, where dozens of fishermen were ambushed while working along the riverbank.

Eyewitnesses who spoke with newsmen said that the insurgents arrived on motorcycles, heavily armed, and accused the fishermen of collaborating with rival fighters from the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP).

A source whose name was withheld maintained that the slain fishermen had been granted conditional access to fish in the river by ISWAP operatives, in exchange for regular tax payments.

According to him, the Sunday’s massacre is believed to be a retaliatory attack by Boko Haram, which maintains control over parts of the riverine axis stretching into Niger Republic.

The incident adds to the growing toll of violence in Nigeria’s northeast, where both Boko Haram and ISWAP have ramped up attacks on civilians and military targets in Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa States.
