2025 MOBO Awards: Ayra Starr becomes first woman in 16 years to win best African act

Nigerian Singer, Oyinkansola Aderibigbe, popularly known as Ayra Starr has made history as the first woman in 16 years to win Best African Music Act at the 2025 MOBO Awards.

She also took home the Best International Music Act award at the ceremony held in Newcastle.

Ayra Starr clinched the award, by beating co-Nigerians Asake and Tems and also South Africa’s Tyla.

She also beat stars like Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj, Megan Thee Stallion, GloRilla, and Latto.

Ayra Starr joins Wizkid who won the same award in 2017 & 2021, alongside Burna Boy who won it in 2020 & 2022.

The event, hosted by Indiyah Polack and Eddie Kadi, celebrated the best of Black music and culture

Grammy Nominations: Singer Jaywon apologises to Ayra Starr

It was gathered that the nominees for the 67th Grammys were recently announced and Ayra Starr failed to get a nod despite her remarkable run this year.

Shortly after the announcement, Jaywon who has been involved in an online beef with Ayra Starr, shared a photo of himself posing with two Grammy awards, which many believed was a shade at Starr.

Following the backlash, Jaywon has now apologised for his action.

He said he believes that Ayra Starr is one of the best female African vocalists.

He explained that he doesn’t pull people down but elevates them for future purposes.

Jaywon is a voting member of the Recording Academy, the organisers of the Grammys.

Famous Nigerian singer, Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, popularly known as Ayra Starr has been captured in a distressing condition.

In a now trending video on social media, the singer is seen lying in bed, flanked by her sister on the right and her mother on the left.

Ayra, who sounds weak, was coughing at one point, causing her anxious sister to ask if she needed water.

The singer declined, as she further explained how her body often betrays her.

She expressed that being with her loved ones brings her the most happiness, and their lively group conversations always make her feel connected no matter where she is.

Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Tems… 7 Nigerians nominated for 2024 BET Awards

Other Nigerians who made the nomination list released are Davido and Lojay.
Ayra Starr led the Nigerian contingent with three nominations for ‘Best New Artiste’, ‘Best African Act’, and ‘Best HER’ while Burna Boy secured two nominations in the ‘Best Male Hip Hop Artiste’ and ‘Best Male R&B/POP Artiste’ categories.
Tems also bagged two nominations for ‘Best Video Director’ and ‘Best Gospel/Inspirational Song’.
Davido and Lojay were nominated in the ‘Viewers Choice Award’ category for their roles in Chris Brown’s ‘Sensational’ while Asake and Seyi Vibez got one nomination each.
Drake led the overall nominations for the 2024 BET Awards with seven nods, followed by Nicki Minaj, with six nominations.
The 2024 BET Awards will air live from Los Angeles on BET on June 30, at 8 p.m. (European Time).
