According to a post on Fabrizio Romano’s X handle on Sunday, Arteta, when asked why Arsenal failed to clinch the title, replied, “Red cards and injuries – for sure.”

“Would we be much closer? For me, the answer is, without question, yes,” he told Sky Sports.

Arsenal will host Newcastle at the Emirates in a must-win encounter to secure qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

The Gunners, currently second in the table with 68 points, have suffered defeat to Newcastle three times this season.

United approaches this match after winning their last Premier League game 3-2 against Ipswich Town, while Arsenal played to a goalless draw against Nottingham Forest. 

The last encounter between these two teams in the Premier League took place in December last year, where Arsenal triumphed 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium, thanks to goals from Jurrien Timber and William Saliba. 

The Gunners will be looking to close the 16-point gap to Premier League leaders Liverpool as they face Manchester United. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta hopes to achieve a league double over United. He has acknowledged that United are capable of delivering a strong performance after observing their play against Real Sociedad in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday. 

There are currently no new injury concerns for Arteta. However, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli remain sidelined, along with long-term injury victims Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz, and Takehiro Tomiyasu. Myles Lewis-Skelly has completed his one-match ban following a red card against West Ham United in February and is available for selection again. 

On the other hand, Manchester United will be eager to avoid another defeat against Arsenal after losing the previous match. They currently sit in 15th position in the Premier League table, with 33 points from 27 matches. 

Harry Maguire and Manuel Ugarte missed the trip to Real Sociedad due to injuries sustained in the match against Fulham, putting more pressure on United manager Ruben Amorim. Additionally, January signing Patrick Dorgu is suspended after receiving a red card against Ipswich Town. 

Amorim will also be without Amad Diallo (ankle) and Kobbie Mainoo (calf) due to injuries. Mason Mount, Jonny Evans, and Luke Shaw have been unavailable for several months. Lisandro Martinez is out for the season following ACL surgery, and backup goalkeepers Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton are also injured. 

A victory for Manchester United would elevate Amorim’s side from their current 15th position in the league. Conversely, a win for Arsenal would allow Arteta’s team to complete a league double over United and reduce the gap to Liverpool to 13 points. 

Recall that Liverpool secured a 3-1 victory over Southampton at Anfield on Saturday.

Two brace from Bukayo Saka and a goal from Kai Havertz gave Arsenal the win over the French Ligue 1 side at Emirates Stadium.

Speaking after the game, Arteta said at his pre-match press conference that Lewis-Skelly did so well against Monaco.

Arsenal’s next game is against Everton in the Premier League this weekend.

This follows the exit of Mohamed Elneny, while Thomas Partey continues to be linked with a move away. Reports say   Onana is also attracting interest from other Premier League clubs including Chelsea and Manchester United.

However, it is believed Arsenal are the first team to make a move this month, as they have made an enquiry to Everton about Onana’s availability.

The report claims that Everton, who are under pressure to meet the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules after being punished for two separate breaches this season, would be open to a deal for £50million.
