The 11 Nigerian military officials on board the C-130 aircraft that made an emergency landing in Burkina Faso have been released. The soldiers were held last week by Burkinabe authorities over what they described as violations of their airspace.

Their release Wednesday night comes about nine days after their arrest. The Nigeria Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, confirmed that the officials were released.

Ebienfa told journalists that the detained soldiers were released after a high-level Nigerian delegation visited Burkina Faso. The delegation, led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, met with the government of Burkina Faso to resolve the disagreement over the emergency landing.

According to a statement issued by the minister’s spokesperson, Alkasim Abdulkadir, both countries have now resolved the issue, “In the spirit of constructive engagement, the two governments amicably resolved the issue concerning Nigerian Air Force pilots and crew, reinforcing confidence and highlighting the effectiveness of dialogue in addressing sensitive matters,” the statement read.

Recall that the Alliance of Sahel States accused Nigeria of violating the airspace of Burkina Faso. The AES, which includes Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso, claimed that the emergency landing in Bobo Dioulasso, a city in the south-west of Burkina Faso, constituted an infringement of national sovereignty.

But, the Nigerian Air Force, NAF denied this, clarifying that the aircraft landed in Burkina Faso for safety reasons and “in accordance with standard safety procedures and international aviation protocols.”
The air force said the crew of the NAF C-130 aircraft “observed a technical concern which necessitated a precautionary landing in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, the nearest airfield.” The air force said the aircraft was travelling to Portugal before the emergency landing.

The Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 32 Artillery Brigade, Major Njoka Irabor, disclosed this in a statement on the official X account of the Nigerian Army, saying the tragedy occurred when the bus driver, travelling from Akure to Abuja, experienced mechanical problems near a military checkpoint in Akunu, Akoko North-East Local Government Area of Ondo State.

“Unfortunately, passengers in the vehicle started requesting a refund of their transport fare. Subsequently, a passenger reached out to a soldier deployed at Akunu checkpoint to help the passengers retrieve their money from the driver”, the statement partly read.

The statement also noted that the soldier’s actions were unprofessional and in violation of military conduct; therefore, the Army immediately took responsibility for the driver’s medical care after the incident.

“Consequently, the soldier showed up and displayed very uncouth and unprofessional conduct, resulting in an altercation with the driver, which led to physical contact between the soldier and the driver. The soldier exhibited an act that is contrary to the Rules of Engagement and Code of Conduct guiding his deployment at the checkpoint.

The statement conveyed the Army’s condolences to the bereaved family and assured them that justice would be served.

The tragic incident occurred on 22 September at Wellington Bassey Barracks, Ibagwa, Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, where Lt. Haruna served as the Regimental Medical Officer of the 6 Battalion.

Reports stated that the couple married in April this year in Jos, Plateau State, had been experiencing frequent disputes, allegedly over infidelity. The confrontation on the night of the incident reportedly escalated, culminating in the attack while Haruna was asleep. His wife allegedly poured petrol on him and set him ablaze.

Haruna, originally from Benue State, sustained severe burns and was initially treated at a barracks clinic before being transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, UUTH. Despite medical efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries.

Commissioned into the Nigerian Army in 2024 after completing his medical training, Lt. Haruna’s death has drawn widespread condemnation.

In a statement, the Nigerian Army expressed deep sorrow over the officer’s death and denounced the act of domestic violence.

“The Nigerian Army strongly condemns this act of domestic violence, recognising the imperative of peaceful coexistence and respect within families,” said Lieutenant Colonel Lawal Muhammed, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations.

He added that preliminary investigations indicate the incident followed a heated domestic argument and emphasized the Army’s commitment to addressing domestic violence and fostering respectful family relationships.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of Lieutenant Haruna,” the statement continued, urging the public to remain calm as the military police continue their investigation.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether Retyit Dalong has been taken into custody or charged in connection with the incident.

According to report, the bandit leader was the second-in-command to Kachala Shuaibu, leader of a gang operating within Masalaci Boka and Ofere Forest areas of Kogi State.

The development comes barely a week after troops recorded a similar feat, neutralising another commander, Kachalla Balla, alongside five of his gang members in a breakthrough against banditry in the state.

A statement issued in Lokoja by Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 12 Brigade, Lieutenant Hassan Abdullahi, confirmed that the operation was carried out by troops under Operation Accord III.

The statement reads, “On 11 September 2025, following credible intelligence on the movement of bandits within Ofere Forest and Ayetoro Gbede general area, the combined troops laid an ambush at a suspected bandit crossing point. Although initial contact was not made, the troops, while withdrawing to base, ran into an ambush staged by the criminals along their route.

He added that the troops later exploited the area and recovered one fully loaded magazine, 31 mobile phones, a blood pressure machine, packs of Tramadol tablets, fetish charms, and ₦16,000 cash. Bloodstains at the scene indicated that several bandits escaped with gunshot wounds.

The morale and fighting efficiency of the troops remain high as they sustain unrelenting pressure on the criminals.”

He assured that the Nigerian Army remains determined to restore lasting peace and security in Kogi State and urged citizens to provide timely and credible information to support ongoing operations.

Reports say  the young boy was killed on Tuesday when the troops of the Nigerian army stormed the Samaru community in Zaria to despers the protesters.

The security operatives were enforcing a curfew earlier imposed on the ancient city by the Kaduna State Government.

Confirming the incident, the NA in a statement issued last night by its spokesperson, Onyema Nwachukwu said the officer responsible for the incident has been arrested.

According to Nwachukwu, the incident happened  when troops of the Nigerian Army received a distress call to help disperse some hoodlums, who had gathered in Samaru, burning tyres and attacking security personnel.

He explained that the mob attempted to attack the troops, which led a soldier to fire a warning shot to scare the hoodlums away, which led to Mohammed’s death, saying that the soldier involved has since been arrested and is undergoing interrogation.

In Cameroon’s Sector 1, two terrorist fighters surrendered to the troops at Wulgo. They have been identified as Rawagana Mustapha, 18, and Mustapha Ali, 20. Similarly, Sector 3 in Nigeria reported the surrender of one terrorist fighter, Ibrahim Malam, 28, to the 403 Amphibious Brigade in Baga. Preliminary investigations revealed that Malam had been a Boko Haram fighter living in Kwaleram, south of Lake Chad, for six years.

This follows an ongoing free medical outreach to communities within the sector one general area of operations.

A statement by the chief spokesperson of the MNJT, Lt Col Abubakar Abdullahi states that the MNJT has been making significant progress as they continue to engage communities in their non-kinetic approach.

This is aimed at enhancing the health conditions of local populations who have been affected by ongoing operations. It provides medical consultations and distributes free drugs to those in need, ensuring that vulnerable communities receive essential healthcare services.

The outreach program provided robust community engagement opportunities and witnessed an overwhelming response from the locals. Residents in the targeted areas had the opportunity to consult with medical professionals about various health issues and receive necessary treatments and medications at no cost. This initiative is pivotal in relieving the healthcare burden on communities that have limited access to medical facilities and face frequent disruptions due to instability.
