Ngige, who served as Nigeria’s Minister of Labour and Employment from 2015 to 2023, was reportedly arrested by EFCC operatives at his residence on Justice Mohammed Bello Road in Abuja.

Earlier that day, speculation arose suggesting that Ngige had been “abducted” by gunmen in the Nigerian capital. However, Fred Chukwuelobe, Ngige’s media aide, swiftly dismissed these claims. In a Facebook post on Wednesday night, Chukwuelobe confirmed that the EFCC had detained the former governor, stating: “Ngige is with the EFCC. He was not ‘abducted’ or ‘kidnapped.’”

At the time of reporting, the reasons for Ngige’s arrest remain unclear. Efforts to reach Dele Olawale, the EFCC’s spokesperson, for a statement were unsuccessful, despite multiple text messages and phone calls.

Ngige, a member of the All Progressives Congress, APC, governed Anambra State from May 29, 2003, to March 17, 2006, under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP. His arrest comes exactly two weeks after his convoy was attacked by gunmen along the Nkpor-Nnobi Road in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State on November 26.

During the attack, a woman who was filming the incident was tragically killed, and a police officer attached to the convoy was also shot. Ngige, however, was not present in the convoy at the time of the assault.

The investigation into the former governor’s detention is ongoing, and more updates are expected in the coming days.

Police said the attackers whose identities are still unknown arrived in a black Lexus Jeep, opened fire, and fled before officers arrived.

Days earlier, the Special Anti-Cult Squad had arrested two suspects after receiving intelligence about a planned gang clash. A firearm was recovered, and the suspects are assisting investigations.

The Police Command said it is following strong leads and remains committed to stopping cultism and violent crime in the state.

On Tuesday, December 2, officers from the Obosi Division tracked down the suspect and arrested him. During the arrest, police recovered a firearm and a cutlass from his possession.

Ikenga said, “The Anambra State Police Command moved quickly after the video surfaced. The suspect was located, arrested, and taken into custody for questioning. A firearm and a cutlass were recovered from him.”

He further stated that initial assessments suggest Anyaoku may require a professional medical evaluation, and the necessary steps are being taken to ensure this is addressed.

The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka for a more thorough investigation.

This arrest follows another significant operation by Anambra police. On November 30, police operatives, in collaboration with the Ozubulu Central Vigilante, arrested Emmanuel Osuigwe, a suspected member of a proscribed secessionist group, in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area. Osuigwe had reportedly fled his hideout in Ukpor, Nnewi South LGA, after a dispute with fellow members.

The arrest was part of a broader crackdown ordered by Anambra’s Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance security across the state.

According to eyewitnesses, the tanker, which was transporting Premium Motor Spirit (petrol), collided with a car and a tricycle. The crash caused a spill of its contents, triggering a massive fire that quickly spread to nearby shops.

“The tanker hit a car and a tricycle, spilling its fuel before exploding. One person was burned alive instantly, and several passengers in the tricycle suffered severe burns,” an eyewitness told newsmen. “By the time firefighters arrived, several shops were already engulfed in flames.”

The explosion sent shockwaves through the community, leading to widespread panic and a heavy traffic gridlock as residents fled the area. Emergency responders, including officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), were quick to divert traffic to alternative routes to prevent further casualties.

“Soludo and his security team are working. We have competent security chiefs in Anambra. I will advise His Excellency, Governor Soludo What they need is better equipment, and insecurity will end. I believe he will do more.

“I have called to congratulate him, but if he doesn’t do well, I will speak. I will advise Governor Chukwuma Soludo to run an inclusive government so that Anambra will be very safe and prosperous,” Ezenwafor said.

Addressing allegations of vote-buying during the election, Ezenwafor described the claims as exaggerated.

“That’s their opinion. I intend to challenge in court whether vote-buying is not election rigging. Almost five political parties engaged in vote-buying. If you remove the five, you will find me. I did not buy votes.

“Even my party agents were taken by the state executives to work for another party. But Anambra people have spoken; we will allow Governor Soludo to finish his four years,” he stated.

Ezenwafor also dismissed claims that he ran as a placeholder, attributing his electoral performance partly to an alleged assassination attempt.

According to Olatunde, the operation was conducted across several hotels and grocery stores in Awka following credible intelligence reports.

He said, “In a bid to rid Anambra State of individuals masquerading as private security operatives, the NSCDC, Anambra State Command, has apprehended five suspected illegal private security operatives and recovered a pump action rifle during a series of raids conducted in Awka.

He listed the suspects as Mmeka Ekene (43), Peter Detuchi Kelvin (28), Sunday Akpan Idiong (45), Enemuo Ifeanyichukwu (26), and Francis Ugochukwu Nwosu (28).

Olatunde explained that the operation, which was carried out by the Private Guard Companies Department, was aimed at flushing out undesirable elements, criminal gangs, and irredentists, as well as preventing emerging security threats, illegal possession of firearms, and any form of violence or intimidation that could undermine the peaceful conduct of the election.

The Commandant further stressed that the NSCDC would not be swayed by the antics of individuals pretending to be private security operatives in a bid to disrupt the electoral process.

Olatunde also revealed that the Command had strengthened surveillance and enhanced intelligence gathering to thwart any attempts by “disruptive elements or desperate politicians” to compromise the electoral process.

The ADC governorship candidate from Nnewi, Anambra south senatorial district stated this at the high court in Awka, the capital of Anambra.

Nwosu, who is from the same zone as Chukwuma Soludo, the incumbent governor who is seeking re-election, promised to serve only one term to complete the tenure of the southern zone.

“I am aware that there is a rotation of the office of the Governor of Anambra State among the three senatorial zones, namely Anambra North, Anambra Central and Anambra South based on equity, natural justice and good governance,” the affidavit reads.

“That the South senatorial zone currently occupying the seat of governor of Anambra State has only one term of four years remaining of the term of office due to the South senatorial zone and thereafter, it shall be the turn of Anambra Central zone to nominate a candidate for the office of governor of Anambra State for eight years, before the office rotates to the North senatorial zone.”

Speaking after he disclosed the affidavit, Nwosu said four years is sufficient to “transform” the state.

The governorship election in the state is scheduled for November 8.

Anambra operates an informal zoning arrangement that rotates the governorship among its three senatorial districts.

He urged the Igbo people to deeply reflect on their past and consider the path forward, emphasising their significant stake in the Nigerian project.

“We must begin the search for a new Igboland. The time has come for us to have honest conversations and collaborate with regional and international blocs about our future,” he added.

The governor commended the Ohanaeze Ndigbo for designating 29 September as a day to honour those who lost their lives in pursuing Nigerian nationhood.

Soludo described the remembrance as a solemn and necessary step towards healing and reflection.

He warned against craving war, noting that only those who had never experienced its horrors would wish it upon a people.

“For those craving war, it is because they never saw one and do not know what it looks like. Those who truly saw war will never pray for such to befall Igboland, Nigeria, or any nation,” he said.

Soludo charged Ohanaeze Ndigbo with taking a firm stand against insecurity and criminality plaguing the South-east region, emphasizing the need for a social and moral rebirth, calling for the revival of core Igbo values such as integrity, hard work, and enterprise.

“We need the cleansing of Igboland to revive and promote our value system. Ohanaeze must rise up and lead this moral transformation,” he said.

According to him, Kanu needs to participate in the roundtable discussion on the future of the Igbo nation.
