Despite Ghana’s failure to qualify for the tournament, Gyan believes Nigeria’s Super Eagles will be strong contenders, alongside hosts Morocco and defending champions Ivory Coast.

The Super Eagles, fresh off their heartbreak of missing out on the 2026 World Cup, are expected to channel their disappointment into a fierce push for their fourth AFCON title. Speaking on the sidelines of the 2025 CAF Awards in Morocco, Gyan highlighted Nigeria’s potential, emphasizing the strength of other African powerhouses as well.

“Ghana is out, and we’re very disappointed about that, but we’ve qualified for the World Cup, so it’s okay. Nigeria did well in the last AFCON, and they were close. Ivory Coast also performed well. These are some of the teams that will be in contention for the title,” Gyan said.

He added, “Morocco is another strong contender, so I would say these three countries; Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and Morocco are the favorites for the tournament.”

Nigeria has been drawn into Group C for AFCON 2025, where they will face Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda in the group stages. The Super Eagles will open their campaign against Tanzania on December 23, followed by Tunisia on December 27, and Uganda on December 30.

The Super Eagles’ last AFCON victory came in 2013 under the late coach Stephen Keshi, adding to their titles from 1980 and 1994. With the pressure of recent setbacks, this year’s competition presents a chance to reassert their dominance in African football.

The match, scheduled for 8 p.m. at Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, promises fireworks as both teams battle for a place in the final and automatic qualification for the continental showpiece.

After missing out on the 2025 U-17 AFCON and the expanded FIFA U-17 World Cup due to their failure to reach the final in the last edition, the Golden Eaglets are determined to return to the global stage.

Led by experienced coach Manu Garba, the Eaglets have shown strong form in this year’s tournament. They thrashed the Benin Republic 4-1 in their opening game and played out a goalless draw against Burkina Faso, topping Group B with four points, four goals scored, and just one conceded.

In contrast, Ghana’s Black Starlets had a more difficult path to the semi-finals. After a 1-1 draw with Togo and a 3-0 defeat to hosts Ivory Coast, they needed a dramatic late rally to beat Niger Republic 3-1 and secure qualification from Group A.

Historically, the Golden Eaglets have held the upper hand in this fixture. They defeated Ghana 4-2 in the opening game of the 2022 edition in Cape Coast and triumphed again 3-2 in the bronze medal match of the last edition in Accra.

A win tonight would not only extend that dominance but also secure Nigeria’s return to the continental stage and a step closer to the global spotlight at the next FIFA U-17 World Cup.

The players have demanded 30% of this prize money, which comes down to $1.2 Million, while the NFF are pleading with them to take 25%, which is a Million Dollars.

A top official said there is no agreement yet between the players and the NFF on how the prize money should be shared.

According to him, the mistake was that there was no agreement about this before the tournament, but at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt, where the team finished third, the boys got 30% of the prize money CAF paid to the NFF.

CAF paid the AFCON prize money to the NFF last month. It was previously reported that some of the players openly accused captain Ahmed Musa of not doing enough to ensure they are paid what they are entitled to.

This latest pay row should not be confused with the 12 Billion Naira generously approved by President Bola Tinubu in January to clear outstanding bonuses and allowances dating back to 2021.
