Oba Oyewale Isaac had petitioned the Nigeria Police Force over an alleged threat to his life by the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly.

In a petition addressed to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone XI, Osogbo, and dated July 29, 2025, the monarch accused Egbedun of issuing threats to have him killed, stripped of his crown, and remanded at the Ilesa Correctional Centre.

The petition was filed through the monarch’s legal representative, K.E. Ngwoke, and cited a phone call allegedly placed by Egbedun to one of the monarch’s wives, Olori Idowu, during which the threats were made.

In a leaked audio made available to journalists, the voice identified as that of Speaker Egbedun was making derogatoring remarks about the monarch and vowing to take actions that would result in the king’s disgrace and detention, adding that “They will remove his crown, beat him, and I will suspend and make sure he is remanded in Ilesa tomorrow.”

The monarch claimed the threats originated from a dispute related to the arrest of a young man from Asi earlier in the year, allegedly ordered by Egbedun.

The monarch, in the petition, alleged that the man was detained and charged on a trumped-up charge.

The Alasi stated he only contacted Egbedun to verify the circumstances of the arrest but was met with hostility and threats instead of an explanation.

The monarch also alleged that the Speaker’s threats made it unsafe for him to return to his palace in Odo-Otin Local Government Area, as the Speaker had allegedly vowed to have him beaten and killed if he returned.

Oba Oyewale added that he has been unable to resume his duties in his community since the threats and has now placed his safety in the hands of security agencies.

Meanwhile, the Assembly Speaker, Adewale Egbedun, in response to the allegations, defended his actions and accused the monarch of threatening him and interfering with police investigations.

In a statement and made available by the Speaker’s Chief Press Secretary, Olamide Tiamiyu, in Osogbo, stated that the monarch had taken offence since he relocated to Asi to be closer to his constituents, a move which, according to him, changed the power dynamics in the area.

He revealed that his convoy was attacked at Okuku three weeks prior and that investigations by the police and DSS were ongoing, with one suspect still at large.

Egbedun claimed that the monarch later called him to discourage him from pursuing justice against the attackers and followed up with repeated threats to him and his aides, describing the monarch’s actions as attempts to intimidate him into silence and obstruct justice while insisting that his respect for the traditional institution remains intact.

“I have a deep regard for traditional institutions and respect for the elderly, but that will not come at the expense of my life,” Egbedun declared.

While admitting that his emotional outbursts were regrettable, Egbedun maintained that his actions were provoked and rooted in self-defence and the preservation of lawand order.

The citizens made this known on a public enlightenment programme,  ‘Stewardship’.

Attesting to this fact, an anonymous engager hinted that the new minimum wage has not been approved for health sector workers which include, Pharmacists, Medical Doctors, and other health professionals,  contrary to the government’s claim that all workers have received it.

Corroborating this,  the Chairman of Osun State Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Christopher Arapasopo, said it was stated on the minimum wage agreement sheet that other structures that cover the health sector are yet to be paid.

A caller from Ife, Akorede Kamorudeen, also enjoined the State Government to see to the abandoned road project, L’ọja Iroko, along the Iludun area as the road has been abandoned  since the Gboyega Oyetola regime.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Information and Civic Engagement, Kolapo Alimi, frowned at politicizing the prerogative of mercy granted to some criminals by Governor Ademola Adeleke and stated that the release has nothing to do with the 2026 Gubernatorial election, as insinuated in some quarters.

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke has assured the citizens that the newly signed budget 2025 will be rigorously implemented for the benefit of the people.

This is contained in a release made available to newsmen by the Spokesperson to the Governor, Olawale Rasheed, where he noted that the Governor made this pledge while signing Budget 2025 into law.

Adeleke emphasized that the signing ceremony further demonstrates his administration’s readiness to forge ahead in the new year with the growth and development of Osun State.

The budget tagged “Budget of Sustainable Growth and Transformation” is the total sum of Four Hundred and Twenty-Seven Billion, Seven Hundred and Forty-Six Million, Nine Hundred and Twenty-Five Thousand, One Hundred and Seventy Naira (₦427,746,925.170.00).

The Governor directed Ministries, Agencies, and Departments to vigorously pursue the implementation for the benefit of the citizens of the state, stating that the budget performance must continue to be commendable every quarter.

He then assured Osun people that the budget would be rigorously implemented to deliver on public expectations, adding that “The Appropriation Act will be our faithful instrument to deliver on the five-point agenda for good governance.

He commended the Ministry of Economic Planning, Budget and Development for upholding professionalism all the way even as he appreciated the House Speaker and other members of the State Assembly.

In his earlier remark, the Speaker of the Osun House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun said the signing ceremony was the final stage of the rigorous processing of budgetary estimates with an eye on public benefits.

According to him, the budget as passed by the House embodied the vision and agenda of the executive mixed with perspectives of the legislature as the elected representatives of the people.

The Commissioner for the Ministry of Economic Planning, Budget, and Development, Prof Moruf Adeleke, gave a technical breakdown of the 2025 budget, assuring the public that all the parameters flow from the deep interest of Governor Adeleke for the people of Osun state.

The Society made this known through its Executive Director, Wasiu Oyedokun-Alli while speaking with newsmen at the December State of the State address, where he affirmed that the incompletion of the House Gate and abandoned rehabilitation of Assembly Quarters shows the lack of accountability of the Arm of Government.

Oyedokun admonished the Executive Arm of the Osun State Government to refrain from interfering in the decision of court-competent jurisdiction, saying the Judiciary should be an independent Arm of Government.

He further inquired from the State Government on behalf of the citizens about the situation of the proposed Airport, as no move has been made ever since the Federal Government canceled the proposed relocation of the Airport.

Oyedokun-Alli also explained that stampede across the country is a pointer to the level of hardship in the land and, however, urged President Bola Tinubu to formulate policies that will tend to alleviate the suffering of the masses.

He acknowledged the reduction in the price of fuel but stated that the price is still high for an average Nigerian considering the present economy.

While speaking, one of the prominent members of the Society, Wole Oladapo, frowned at the remark of the incumbent Chief of Staff, Kazeem Akinleye, threatening opposition members, urging them to either support Governor Adeleke or leave the state.

This, according to Oladapo, is inflammatory and can cause unrest in the State.

The Osun Masterminds demanded that the Osun State Governor immediately reins in the persons claiming to be representing Government, who are bent on hijacking the said land, against existing judgment of the Osun State High Court.

This was made known by the Executive Director of the Group, Wasiu Oyedokun-Alli, while presenting the October State of the State address, where he noted that the society is aware of the rift that broke out between the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, and a Lawyer who was on assignment on the said land.

He said the group is aware of the series of events that has transpired on the land between the Osun State Government and the Gbaemu Royal Family, which culminated in a judgment of the Osun State High Court.

Oyedokun also condemned the ongoing construction of the overhead bridge at Oke fia and Lameco junction saying such construction is needless and worthless considering the present day economy, a stand he said the Organization also made public when the previous Government constructed the Olaiya flyover.

According to him, “when the Oyetola Government commenced the construction of the Olaiya Flyover, we made it clear that it was a needless venture and a number of our constituent organizations fiercely took the previous government on, going as far as submitting complaints to anti-graft agencies.”

While speaking on the hardship in the country, Oyedokun maintained that increment in the state’s allocation has no impact on lives the citizens of the state and however appealed to both federal and state government to intensity effort on alleviating programs that will make life easy for all.

The group again called on the Federal Government and the Osun State Government more importantly, to as a matter of urgency, intensify efforts to free the masses from the shackles of poverty.

In a public release titled “July 2024 Reflections on Osun”, the group through its Spokesperson, Olalekan Fagbemi, stated that “the Osun State House of Assembly as currently constituted, has not lived up to expectations in both the legislative accomplishments and public conduct of her members”.

The group advised the Osun State House of Assembly to “double its efforts and ensure this chance they all got to lead a generational shift in our State’s leadership, becomes the foundation for increased youth inclusion across every sector of our dear State.”

The group, through its July Reflections, also counseled the Osun State Government on the need to ensure overall development of Osun State through adequate funding of critical sectors of development like Agriculture. The group condemned the current situation where several unproductive sectors of the State got more financial provisions than many other sectors that have capacity to drive the state’s growth.

The group stated that “the welfare of State citizens is first the business of the government of that State, especially areas of Food Production, Youth Development, Women & Children Welfare, and Healthcare Delivery. Osun cannot afford to fail in these regards while building bridges.”

The Osun Renaissance Project, according to the release made available to newsmen, “is a platform for engagement of critical stakeholders, policy formulators, and leaders. The sole objective of TORP is to maintain seamless engagement with policymakers, analyzing policies, and offering timely advice where necessary”.

The full public release below:

JULY 2024 REFLECTIONS ON OSUN – PUBLIC RELEASE

Introducing The Osun Renaissance Project

Since 1999, under our current democratic practice, policy inconsistency has made
Osun State unable to excel to the extent of her true potentials. This has not been
due to the failure of leadership alone, but also the failure of followers to consistently
engage leaders in critical development discourse. Followers, particularly the educated and exposed elites, have failed to efficiently
engage successive Governments in Osun State, especially on critical policy issues and
the conduct of public office holders.

We note with some regrets that this failure of relevant stakeholders to engage
government in critical discourse, has been the single most potent reason for several
policy somersaults in our State.

The Osun Renaissance Project is a platform for engagement of critical stakeholders, policy formulators, and leaders. The sole objective of TORP is to maintain seamless
engagement with policymakers, with a view to analyse policies, and offer timely
advice where necessary.

We must put on record that TORP is not a political organization and will maintain a
nonpartisan position at all times, to ensure fairness in all engagements with the
State’s policymakers.

July 2024 Reflections of The Osun Renaissance Project

The Osun State House of Assembly

We have keenly followed the activities of the Osun State House of Assembly since it
was inaugurated about a year ago. We were particularly excited about the
concentration of young people in the Assembly, signaling a long-anticipated
paradigm shift in our political governance.

We were further elated by the election of young Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun as the
Speaker of the Assembly, again signaling a generational transfer of power, as should
be in a sustainable democracy.

However, the Osun State House of Assembly as currently constituted, has not lived
up to its expectations in both the legislative accomplishments and public conduct of
her members.

We must make particular reference to recent news about the Speaker’s involvement
in a land dispute in Osogbo. While his office continues to claim that his involvement
in the matter was due to a distress call, he must still note that public office holders
must conduct themselves in ways that are not only dignifying, but are also reflective
of the honour ascribed to the office they hold.

The Speaker must take lessons in public conduct for public office holders and
understand that our society cannot work by such spontaneous reactions, but
through the unobstructed functioning of the several structures that make up our
society. As head of the Legislature, he must understand the conducts permissible for
his office and must stop acting in ways that call the integrity of his office to question.

Members of the House of Assembly must also double up, and put more efforts into
delivering on their mandates through the promulgation of landmark laws that will
galvanize the State’s development and guarantee a better life for all citizens.

Worthy of note, is the Osun Youth Policy, a youth development roadmap that was
launched under the Oyetola-led administration in our State. A Youth-dominated
Assembly should normally be interested in the speedy implementation of such
laudable ideas, to better the lives of their fellow youths.

We call on the Osun State House of Assembly to double its efforts and ensure this
chance they all got to lead a generational shift in our State’s leadership, becomes the
foundation for increased youth inclusion across every sector of our dear State.

Total Development of Osun

The focus of any government should be overall development of their domain. This
covers several development indices including infrastructure, human capital, and food
security. One-sided development does not achieve the objective of a sustainable
society where all citizens can thrive.

We take careful note of Governor Adeleke’s infrastructural developmental efforts
and while we may have reservations about the necessity of and approach to the
execution of a number of the projects, we still commend Government for making the
efforts.

However, as stated earlier, overall development should be the focus of any
government in an emerging State like Osun. We are thus bothered about the
seeming neglect of the other critical sectors of development, including Agriculture
and Food Security; Women, Children, and Social Affairs; and Youths Development.

A quick look at the Budget Performance Report for Quarter 1 2024, shows some very
disturbing realities.

For example, while the Osun State House of Assembly spent a whooping sum of Six
hundred and eleven million, Ninety-One thousand two hundred and Eighty Naira, Forty-Eight Kobo (611,091,280.48) in Quarter 1 of 2024, the entire Ministry of
Agriculture and Food Security got a paltry One Hundred and Sixty-Four million, Nine
hundred and Ninety-Seven thousand, Nine hundred and Sixty-Nine Naira, Fifty-Five
kobo (164,997,969.55) in the same period.

The Osun State House of Assembly, a sector of governance that produces nothing, got nearly four times the fund allocated to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food
Security that is expected to produce food and ease the lives of the State’s people.

Within the same period, the Ministry of Works spent in excess of Seventeen Billion
Naira (17,242,506,008.28), suggesting that the current government in the State
places a higher value on infrastructure than it places on food security.

This worrisome trend cannot continue if Osun must truly develop. We must focus on, and adequately finance critical sectors of development, ensuring that we achieve
holistic growth that will make life easier on the citizenry.

We believe that the welfare of State citizens is first the business of the government
of that State, especially areas of Food Production, Youth Development, Women &
Children Welfare, and Healthcare Delivery. Osun cannot afford to fail in these
regards while building bridges.

Tourism Development

One of the greatest potentials that Osun State has today, is the presence of a large
number of important tourist attractions that have not just spiritual histories, but also
cultural significance.

However, the State has persistently failed in harnessing these limitless potentials. A
recent visit to many of the tourist sites in Osun revealed that the sites cannot truly
live up to their full potentials for several reasons, chief of which is the poor
ownership/management structure of the sites.

A quick look at the Budget Performance report for Quarter 1 2024 also revealed that
the Culture and Tourism Ministry received a paltry sum of 172,460,603.60 in three
months. This figure will most likely have gone into servicing recurrent expenditure in
the Ministry, instead of adequate financing to turn around the tourist attractions.

As it is with the Agriculture sector, the State Government does not seem to be
interested in real revenue generating sectors and has left much of them to rot. We
should not continue like this.

We advise the Osun State Government to do better with critical sectors that have
capacity to drive revenue generation and deepen our economy.

Conclusion

We urge the Osun State Government to consider The Osun Renaissance Project as a
partner in progress and take our reflections on the development of Osun State in
good faith.

While we maintain a strictly nonpartisan disposition, under an able Coordinator who
is a Private Sector player and is committed to deepening the State’s economy, our
Project will constructively engage government, acting as a non-aligned Think Tank
that will not just help government work better, but will also put government on its
toes with two-way communications between us and Government, then us and the
people.

May Osun State succeed.
