A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by its National Chairman, Nafiu Gombe, has disowned reports of the defection and registration of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, at the party’s Enugu zonal office.

In a statement, the faction, which identified itself as the authentic national leadership of the ADC, said the purported registration did not follow due process and therefore could not be recognised by the party.

The faction stressed that only the national leadership has the authority to validate high-profile defections and registrations, adding that any action taken outside approved channels remains null and void.

Recall Obi announced his defection to the ADC at an event held at the Nike Lake Resort in Enugu State.

At the event, the former Anambra State governor called on Nigerians and opposition forces to unite under a broad coalition to “rescue Nigeria from poverty, disunity and democratic decline.”

In a New Year message issued in Abuja, Gombe stressed that it became important for them to clarify misleading information circulating in the public domain over the party’s membership registration process.

He said the ADC is founded on order, discipline and strict adherence to its constitution, adding that its membership registration process is clearly defined.

“It has come to our attention that a certain Mr Peter Obi was reportedly registered at a party zonal office in Enugu. The NWC wishes to categorically state that this action does not align with the constitutional and stipulated procedures for membership registration into the African Democratic Congress.

“The process of registering with the ADC is clearly outlined as follows: ward registration. Prospective members must register at their respective ward levels within their state of origin or residence. This is the primary and constitutionally recognised point of entry.

“On documentation and issuance of membership card, upon successful registration at the ward level, a validated party membership card is issued.”

The party said its constitution does not allow registration at zonal or national offices.

He added, “The party’s constitution does not provide for the registration of individuals at zonal or national offices outside of their designated wards. Any registration carried out contrary to this provision is considered irregular and invalid.

“Therefore, the office of the national chairman distances the original, constitutionally-governed ADC from the reported registration of Mr Peter Obi at the Enugu Zonal office. The party is investigating this breach of due process.”

The leadership, therefore, urged party supporters and the general public to disregard claims suggesting alternative channels for party registration, noting that ward-level registration remains the only recognised method.

Gombe’s clarification came a day after the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee of the Labour Party described Obi’s defection to the ADC as a “liberation” for the party.

The Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, said in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday that the party regretted fielding Obi as its presidential candidate in the 2023 election.

According to him, Obi’s exit only formalised a political separation that had existed for months amid a leadership crisis in the party.

The defection, currently underway at Nike Lake Resort in Enugu, has attracted prominent political figures from across the South-East, highlighting the political significance of the move.

Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, has remained vocal about his ambition to contest for the nation’s highest office and is reportedly seeking a broader political platform to advance that goal.

However, the Governor of Abia State and the only sitting Labour Party governor, Alex Otti, has declined to join the defection, maintaining that he remains a committed member of the Labour Party.

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has officially inaugurated its Delta State Committee, signaling its intention to unseat both President Bola Tinubu and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in the 2027 general election.

The inauguration took place in Asaba, the state capital, with the party outlining a comprehensive strategy to expand its presence across all levels of governance.

The National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, emphasized the importance of establishing party offices at the state, local government, ward and unit levels, alongside a broad sensitization campaign aimed at raising awareness about the party’s mission.

Abdullahi stressed that the ADC’s goal extend far beyond the political arena.

He explained that the party is committed to promotimg justice, equity and transparency with the aim of fundamentally changing the trajectory of Nigerian politices.

He said, “The important thing is that we in ADC are very clear that the problem Nigeria has today is as a result of the kind of politics we have played over the years, and if you are going to set Nigeria on a different trajectory and to make politics work for the people, we have to play a different type of politics.

“And that is why ADC is committed that all through, we will ensure justice, we will ensure equity, and we will ensure transparency, because we believe that this is what has been missing in Nigerian politics, and that’s what ADC plans to bring back as we defeat President Bola Tinubu in the coming election.

The party’s national publicity secretary further said, “So you ask yourself, ‘Delta is one of the most resourced states in Nigeria, ‘ why has it remained like this?” So it means that the government has not worked for the people. We have gone to other states where they don’t even have the kind of resources that Delta boasts of, and you see transformation year in, year out.

“I have not seen that since I came here. So, that is the kind of commitment that ADC is bringing, that when ADC is in power, whoever is elected on the platform of ADC knows that he is there to work for the people, because the party will not accept anything less.

The media Coordinator of the Osun State Chapter of the African Democratic Congress, Kamorudeen Adabanija, has debunked viral claims that the ADC has adopted a candidate for the 2026 Governorship election in Osun State.

Adabanija, who spoke in an interview on Redio Afinju’s political progamme, Gbagede Oro, clarified that it was the leadership of the Omoluabi caucus that decided to conduct a shadow election where the former speaker of the State House of Assembly, Najeem Salam, was chosen out of the three aspirants who showed interest in the Governorship election under the faction, to represent them at the primaries.

According to him, no one has obtained the form for the primaries of the ADC, to be held on the 15th of December 2025 except Salam.

The media Coordinator, further speaking, discredited the news that the former Secretary to the State Government, Moshood Adeoti, has officially left the party because of the rift between him and the former Speaker, clarifiying that Adeoti did not exit the ADC, but only said he was no longer interested in the Omoluabi faction, even though he is yet to obtain the membership card which makes him an official member of the party.

Adabanija also contered rumors that Salam was just a figure-head for the party primary election and that the Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has been arranged as the party’s candidate at the upcoming gubernatorial election.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has sharply criticized the Nigerian government over the release of the 24 schoolgirls abducted from the Government Girls’ Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, describing their freedom as a “damning reminder” of the country’s escalating security crisis.

In a statement issued by his media office, Atiku argued that the return of the girls should not be celebrated as an achievement, but rather as a stark illustration of Nigeria’s deepening insecurity. He referred to the situation as “not a trophy moment,” but a “clear indication that terrorists now operate with impunity, negotiating openly and dictating terms, while this administration merely issues press releases to save face.”

Atiku’s comments were a direct response to statements made by Bayo Onanuga, the Presidential Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, during an interview onNational Television, Onanuga had praised the role of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the military in tracking the kidnappers in real time and facilitating the girls’ release without paying a ransom.

“The security forces know the bandits operating in that area, they know where they are, and they know the risk of collateral damage,” Onanuga said, defending the government’s actions. He added that security personnel must carefully balance their operations to avoid harm to civilians.

However, Atiku rejected Onanuga’s narrative, calling it a “shameful attempt to whitewash a national tragedy” and mask the government’s incompetence.

“If, as Onanuga claims, the DSS and military could ‘track’ the kidnappers in real time and ‘made contact’ with them, then why were these criminals not neutralized or arrested on the spot?” Atiku asked. “Why is the government boasting about talking to terrorists instead of eliminating them? Why has kidnapping become just another routine phone call between criminals and state officials?”

He added that the administration’s explanation suggested that “terrorists and bandits have become an alternative government, negotiating, collecting ransom, and walking away untouched, while the presidency celebrates their compliance.”

Atiku further emphasized that no responsible government would applaud itself for negotiating with terrorists it claims to have under surveillance, nor would it congratulate itself for allowing criminals to remain free to continue their operations.

The abduction occurred on November 17, when gunmen attacked the school in Maga, killing one staff member and kidnapping 25 students from their dormitory. One girl managed to escape, leaving 24 girls in captivity until their release on Tuesday.

In response to the release, President Bola Tinubu expressed relief that all 24 girls had been accounted for, praising the efforts of security agencies. A statement issued by Onanuga emphasized that the federal government would continue to prioritize security operations in troubled areas and urged for an increased presence of security forces in regions facing similar threats.

Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris also confirmed that no ransom had been paid, crediting the release to the coordinated efforts of security agencies.

The National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Rauf Aregbesola has sharply criticized the administration of the All Progressives Congress, APC, claiming that the party has failed to deliver on key issues such as the economy, security, and overall governance.

Aregbesola, a former governor of Osun State, made these remarks during the unveiling of ADC’s campaign in Osogbo, Osun State.

Speaking before a large crowd of supporters, Aregbesola declared that the APC’s time in power would come to an end in the 2027 general election. He urged Nigerians to reject the party, asserting that its leadership has not lived up to expectations in any major sector.

“APC Has Failed, God Is No Longer with Them”

Aregbesola, who played a key role in ADC’s party mobilization across the nine federal constituencies in Osun State, criticized the APC’s governance style. He said, “God has left the present government, even the one at the center. They used to rig elections, we know their tactics.”

In his address, Aregbesola made a passionate plea to Nigerians to support ADC in the upcoming election. He suggested a unique strategy for voters, advising them to care for older women, who he believes play a crucial role in the political process, on election day. “On the day of the poll, give them new clothes, let them sit in groups of 10 per polling booth, and leave the rest to God,” he said.

Aregbesola further criticized the APC for prioritizing selfish interests over collective good. “They started with the word ’emi’ (I), instead of ‘awa’ (we). They have been disgraceful in all sectors—economy, security, and governance,” he added.

Earlier in the day, Aregbesola led ADC leaders to the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji, for a courtesy visit. Speaking to the gathered crowd, Aregbesola expressed confidence that ADC would emerge victorious in the next election, and hinted that following the win, the party would meet at the Abere Osun Government Secretariat.

Reacting to Aregbesola’s comments, Kola Olabisi, the Director of Media for the Osun APC, questioned the former interior minister’s stance. “At what point did APC fail?” Olabisi asked, pointing out that Aregbesola had served as both governor for eight years and minister for four years under the very party he now criticizes. “He is attacking himself,” Olabisi added.

Aregbesola had previously advocated for Nigerians to embrace the ADC, asserting that under its leadership, the country would see an end to banditry and other violent crimes. In response to speculation suggesting that Obi had snubbed the party’s leadership because the secretariat was once used as Atiku’s campaign office, the ADC has clarified the situation.

The event was attended by key figures including ADC National Chairman David Mark, National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. However, both Obi and Atiku were notably absent and did not release any formal statements regarding their absence.

David Mark described the new secretariat as a symbol of the coalition’s vision for reshaping Nigeria’s political future. “This is a physical testament to our collective resolve to build a greater nation. The ADC coalition is a historic child of necessity, driven by the people’s desire for good governance, greater accountability, and a stronger democracy,” he said.

Obi’s absence had sparked rumors that it was related to the building’s past association with Atiku, but ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi dismissed these claims. Abdullahi emphasized that Obi remains committed to the coalition, explaining that Obi was out of the country at the time of the unveiling and Atiku had prior commitments that prevented his attendance.

“The event was impromptu, and as a result, many party leaders were unavailable. Obi was out of the country, and Atiku had other engagements,” Abdullahi clarified. “There is absolutely no truth to the notion that Peter Obi is withdrawing from the coalition. He is still with us.”

Abdullahi also addressed rumors surrounding the building’s ownership, stating, “Atiku is not the owner of the building. He leased it, and his lease had expired. The ADC has since rented the space.”

He further asserted that there was no rift within the party’s leadership and reaffirmed the coalition’s unity in its goal to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.

“Obi is not abandoning the ADC coalition. He will make a statement soon, but he’s being careful about the decisions he makes. With many people expressing interest in him, he wants to ensure that he is making the right choice,” Tanko said.

Tanko explained that Obi’s careful approach to his political future is aimed at avoiding being “trapped” into a situation where he would feel cornered. “He needs to be extremely cautious about where he seeks his ticket,” Tanko added. “Our hope is that the ADC will offer him the presidential ticket, especially given that the next presidency should be for a southern candidate.”
