The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Osun State, Mutiu Agboke, made the call while speaking with journalists where he questioned the roles played by other stakeholders particularly the media, security agencies, civil society organisations, the political class, and religious leaders during elections. He lamented the increasing violence before and on election day.

He urged key players to wake up to their responsibilities and do what is necessary for the advancement of Nigeria’s democracy.

The REC also called on stakeholders to take the lead in voter education and enlighten the public on the electoral process.

According to Agboke, “So, for us, INEC, we will continue to campaign against the cankerworm of trying to buy the minds of the people. That’s number one. Number two, even if you have the money, people still believe they can deploy violence to gain an advantage.

“There is nothing you can do to curb it other than to continue engaging stakeholders and discouraging them from unleashing terror. We need to continue talking to our people to believe in democracy.”

The electoral commissioner also urged religious leaders and political actors to actively participate in safeguarding the integrity of elections.

Adeleke made this known in a release signed by his Spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed where he described Aregbesola’s eight-year tenure as the “worst in Osun’s history.”

This remarks came as response to Aregbesola’s statement while addressing supporters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Osogbo.

Redio Afinju earlier reported that Aregbesola had boasted that the ADC would dislodge the Adeleke-led administration from the government house come 2026.

Adeleke accused Aregbesola of mismanaging workers’ welfare by introducing the controversial half salary policy.

“A man who should be remorseful and tender public apologies for his years of maladministration has the audacity to attack a Governor who is paying up the half salary affliction, clearing unjustified debts, and rehabilitating brutalized Osun workers,” the statement read.

Adeleke also berated Aregbesola for leading the state into an unsustainable debt, which according to him,is still affecting Osun’s financial health today.

“Our people are smart enough to know that the worst era for Osun State is that of Mr. Aregbesola, under whom many pensioners lost their lives and thousands of livelihoods were disrupted,” Adeleke declared.

While describing Aregbesola as a “shrew who doesn’t realize he’s smelling,” Adeleke
noted that 2026 will be a payback year, where Osun voters will reject the return of what he termed “the dark days” of Aregbesola’s rule.

“No voter in Osun is ready for a return to the evil days. The people will punish the former Governor and his party for willfully inflicting pain on them,” he said.

The Former Chairman of Irewole Local Government made this known while featuring on Rédíò Afínju’s Yoruba current affairs programme ‘Gbagede Ọrọ’ where he noted that the flag bearer of the Party should come from Osun West Senatorial District, as the zone has not produced any Governor in the State since 1999.

He hinted that if the Incumbent Minister of Blue and Marine Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, shows no interest in running for the post, the next candidate should come from the West while stressing that politics is democratic and a fight for one’s right.

Abbas who affirmed that the West agenda has been on since the 2018 election, however, got relaxed as a result of Party supremacy and the decision of Party Elders.

While speaking, Abass opined that picking the gubernatorial candidate ticket from the West will bring back decamped Party bigwigs.

Speaking on behalf of the Party, a Chieftain of the APC in the State, Jamiu Olawumi, made this known at a Press Conference held at the Ilerioluwa Campaign Office, where he noted that Adeleke’s exercise of the prerogative of mercy is aimed at releasing criminals with which the incumbent government will rig the forthcoming election.

The Former Special Adviser to the Governor on Education stated that the release of a Police Officer under trial, Amenih George, infringes on the rights of the Judicial Arm of the Government while saying that the Judiciary should be freed from external intervention from the Executive.

Olawumi further accused the incumbent administration of being wasteful, with claims that the administration has expended not less than ₦38 billion on the Governor’s Office in 24 months and has failed to employ a new set of teachers ever since they came on board.

In his separate address, the Party’s Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi accused Ademola Adeleke, through his Commissioner for Finance, of signing a foreign loan offer worth ₦26.6billion for a Women project, and opined that the fund might be diverted to finance the forthcoming 2026 Election in the State.

This according to him is in addition to an existing loan of ₦3.92 billion procured by the Ministries Of Agriculture and Food Security, Youths and Sports, and Rural Development and Community Affairs.

Olabisi also condemned the Adeleke Government’s lackadaisical attitude towards the newly established University of Ilesa, stating that the school is unaffordable to the wards of common people due to its exorbitant fees.

He called on the Adeleke Government to ameliorate economic challenges by paying Minimum wage in full, across all strata of workers in the State.

The declaration was made during the inauguration of the NNPP’s offices in the Ila, Boripe, and Ifelodun local government areas of the state.

Speaking at the event, Osun NNPP Chairman, Tosin Odeyemi, expressed confidence in the party’s chances of clinching victory in 2026, citing the incumbent administration’s perceived shortcomings and the economic challenges facing the country.

Odeyemi stated that the current economic hardship is demarketing the APC at the federal level, while the PDP administration in Osun has shown limited capacity to improve governance, stating it gives the NNPP party an edge as it gear up to end Governor Adeleke’s reign.

However, the Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, dismissed the NNPP’s claims as baseless.

Speaking to journalists, the PDP’s Director of Media and Publicity, Oladele Bamiji, described the NNPP’s position as empty rhetoric, emphasising Governor Adeleke’s strong performance since assuming office.

He added that the NNPP is just trying to please their sponsors.

Bamiji further said NNPP cannot stop the re-election of a performing governor like Ademola Adeleke. The people of Osun will not allow anyone to derail the progress the state is currently enjoying,”.

The NNPP’s bold claims and the PDP’s firm rebuttal highlight the growing tension as political parties begin preparations for the next governorship election in Osun State.
