Liadi detailed that the accident occurred around 4 p.m. on Friday in Okwelle, Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State. The incident happened when the team’s Coaster bus collided with a stationary truck while attempting to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming vehicle.
At least 20 team members were on the bus, and some players sustained various injuries. The team was en route to the TICO/SELECT Ifeanyi Ekwueme Preseason Tournament in Abakaliki, Ebonyi, at the time of the crash.
Liadi noted that despite the driver’s efforts to avoid the accident, the collision caused a significant shock to Coach Obi. He was found unconscious with a minor injury to his right leg and was promptly transported to a nearby private hospital. Despite the medical team’s best efforts, Coach Obi passed away while attempts were made to revive him.
The club has expressed gratitude for the support from the football community but requests privacy for the bereaved family during this difficult time.
According to sources, Coach Obi’s body has been taken to the Federal University Teaching Hospital, FUTH in Owerri, where it is being held at the morgue while the injured players are also receiving medical care at the same facility.
